Need quick assistance Landplane build

Hey all,

I am on my way to the workshop to start a landplane build today.

Got everything sorted accept... I have never seen one up close haha.

My question I pretty simple. Do the scrapers (angle profiles) stick out underneath the sides of the frame? And if so, how far would be alright?

I always thought the bottom sides of the angle profiles were level with the sides of the frame but I have found an immage online where the interchangeable wearing blade sticks out. (See the pictures). I whas not planning to put the wearing blades on there. Or should I do that as wel?

depending on the brand it varies, Ive seen some hang down 1"-1.5", others that are 1/2-3/4" down. your are defiantly going to want some kind of hardened cutting edge, mild steel wont hold up for very long in aggregate.

I made mine 3 years ago and it works great.

My blades protrude about 1/2" or 13mm below the side rails.
The blades I made are AR400 or AR500 steel (very important) normal steel will not last a season.
They are fixed and non movable or replaceable, but no need as after 3 years of some hard work they still look real good.

Another question, I see some planes that got the blades under an angle/offset from the frame and some that are just welded at 90 degrees. At the moment I am still cutting the parts. What do you think? Offset or 90 degrees?

Heres a few pics. I borrowed Wolfmans land plane, ( red) and did the same as your doing. I made a slightly lighter version, as I pull it with my BX. I believe I spaced the AR500 blades down 5/8 inch below the side rails. It works great! Hope the pics help. A little Kubota Orange and a Kubota decal too.

For cutting edges go to the county road commission and see if they have any wear bars off there grader blades. The ones I got had one side new and were about 4 inches wide by 8 foot long

After spending the day planing my roads and trails, and actually making a couple new roads thru the trees, I can not imagine if I hadn’t used AR steel on the two cutting blades. The main gravel road and driveway were already like concrete. It took a couple passes just to break thru the surface.
What a difference it made on the small pot holes left from spring rains.
