Hi Guys- Seeking thoughts and impressions for a few things. I own a landscape rake, but find that it is not that great for Driveways in regards to cutting down high spots etc. Was wondering which way I should go, box scraper or land plane? Also, I want to use some sort of quick attach to swap between the two.

If you have the $$$$$ land plane is awesome.......a box blade is a less expensive land plane and will do a good job also. If you have 1/4" valve it will be hard to get your depth just right - if you have position control it will be a lot easier.

Agree w/ member that land plane is a super tool. Challenged someone that they are not available w/ scarifier shanks, but alas they are available.

Outdoors with the Morgan's is a- you tube channel. Mike was not familiar w/ a land plane, especially for driveway remediation.

The video shows his excitement w/ the results. Not sure which video but can look it up for you if interested. The # would be above 140. He titles his videos descriptively. (Update: video # 248)

Not sure if titan offers a land plane but their prices, direct w/ shipping included, are $$ reasonable, good quality as my purchases have borne out.

EDIT: Titan land plane $350, not available w/ shanks. Sacrifiers very useful feature.

I certainly don't disagree with the other guys. Seen photos here of some great land plane work. Best tool for what you're after from what I've seen here.

Only reason I vote box blade is it can serve multiple functions. I really like mine - -moved snow with it this morning...

If the crown is good nothing beats a land plane. If you need to restore the crown a box blade is better. U might be good with a Box blade and rake.

I have a land plane but need my back blade to restore the crown.

Only used mine a few times but I things it's gonna be one of those tools you wonder why you waited so long to get.

A land plane is a great tool. You may not use it much, because it is SO efficient. It works so well, you don’t have to keep going over the same area

You could also consider a nice and heavy rear blade. It will take more getting used to, but has more uses IMO. Second easiest seems to be the BB, and easiest is the LP.

Also it might be possible to rent a LP from your local tractor shops or rental yards. If you are only using it once a year probably not worth buying if you have a rental option.

One more thought...I have seen landscape rakes that can take an interchangeable blade..so you don't have to buy the 3 pt connection assembly again. Just remove the bolt for the rake and put on the blade. Not sure if yours is like this?

So what size plane should I get for a BX? 48 or 60?

How about the quick hitch?

You don’t want one that is so big and heavy, that it stops your tractor. I fabricated a 72” wide plane, ( I have a BX25D, borrowed NIW’s plane and built a similar version) but it’s not overly heavy. If I am planing a “fresh” area, I can take shallower cuts, and while maintaining my gravel driveway and roads, cut deeper to roll the gravel and fill pot holes.

Your bx25 will handle a 6' plane?

I have a 60" Land Plane that I pull with my L4600, and full of material it takes 4 wheel drive to pull it. I tend to keep it 1/2 to 3/4 full when using it so that material feathers out the back to fill in low spots as needed but enough room to level high spots without the material running over the top of the plane.

I pulled the same plane with a L3400 and it did not like the plane being over 1/2 full even in 4x4.

I would think the 48" would be a better fit based on my use of a 60" with a bigger tractor. I have had mine for 6 years and use it about once a month when my roads are dry to maintain them. It is an awesome implement. I have a top link dedicated for it so all I do is hook up plane and top link and go, rarely any adjusting required, slightly tilted forward cuts the drive for leveling and if feathering is all that is needed about 3 to 4 turns of the top link is all that is needed.

Good luck.
