I have got my L1500dt all apart replacing the main shaft, reverse gear, clutch, throw out brg.. I am installing the clutch disc and did not note which way the disc goes on. The disc splines protrude further on one side than the other, the book looks like the longer spline goes toward the rear, but I want to be sure. Can anyone help me. I am afraid the if it is the wrong way, the throw out bearing could bottom out and prevent the clutch from releasing. Please help. Bob.

Typically clutch is labelled flywheel side.
Failing that you should be able to tell which way it goes by wear on splines.
I havent had mine apart yet,(knock on wood)so i cant say for sure which way it goes.

When you lay the clutch disc up against the flywheel, it will usually only go one way. The metal hub sticks out too far, and won't let the disc get to the flywheel face.

Thanks for everyone's input. I put the disc up against the flywheel and the long part of the spline has 1/8 inch clearance. If I install it that way, I know I will not have any interference with the throwout bearing moving the disc too far, but it does put the center of the disc further from the trans on the mainshaft. I don't know if that would make any difference. OK, here is my concern. If I put the long part of the spline away from the flywheel and when depressing the throw out bearing and the throwout bearing yoke hits the disk, then pressure would be forced on the flywheel engaging the mainshaft. It might be that the distance the throw out bearing moves is not far enough to bottom out on the disc, so might not be an issue. The picture in the parts manual shows that the long part of the spline is away from the flywheel, but sometimes I don't trust the drawings. I wish I had taken a picture, but I didn't. There is no information on the parts to say which way it goes. Would it make any difference how far away the center of the spline is on the mainshaft? The difference is only about 1/2 inch depending on which way I would install the disc. Any more information would be appreciated, Bob.

OK, Tooljunkie, I took your advice and compared the wear marks on the old shaft and the clutch disc. The wear marks seem to match better when the long splined side is toward the flywheel. By my measurements, the main shaft almost butts up against the flywheel and when the disc is on it, the wear marks line up. The other way, the wear marks are off about 1/4 inch. So, unless anyone can straighten me out, tomorrow I think I will install the disc with the long part of the spline on the disc toward the flywheel. Bob.

On most the longer part of the splines goes towards the throw out bearing.

If you post a picture of the clutch disk and the pressure plate we should be able to confirm that. ;)

Here are some pictures, and thanks for your help. Well, my camera shoots too large of pictures, so I will try to find a camera that shoots small ones, sorry.

Remember, the pressure plate moves away from flywheel, and not very much.
I would match it up with wear marks on splines.

Well, I looked in the repair manual and found a detailed drawing/cross-section of the clutch disc and the drawing showed the long part of the spline on the disc, went toward the pressure plate, so that is the way I will install it. I also looked at the wear marks on the throw out bearing sleeve and saw that it apparently only moves about 1/2 inch, so there is more than that clearance with respect to the room between the forks of the pressure plate and the spline of the disc, so I don't think I will have to worry, so thanks to everyone that has helped me with this oversight on my part, and by that I mean that I didn't take pictures. Thanks again, Bob.

I am going through the same process right now, and decided to look over my pics.
Did the same thing! No photos of that clutch disc orientation

Thanks for the thread, BTW, where did you get your input shaft,
and were you able to find a NOS or Kubota part, dealer wanted $1300.00,
went with Taiwan, needless to say. Ordered it from Cypress of all places.

I would have saved about 100. If I had bought it from the outfit in Cypress, but I found out too late. I bought from White Horse Distribution in Canada. The first one he sent me was the wrong one, but he is sending me the correct one now. He sent me the one that did not have the fifth removable gear with the key. I received the gasket kit today, which came from Australia. When I get the mainshaft, I will have everything to start putting it back together. What is the best and cheapest front end loader to buy, does anyone know? Bob.

Yes sir, the company for the L1500dx gasket set is: Japanese Import Tractor Parts. Part no. T1390, or TI390, they printed it both ways, so I don't know which one is correct, so you had better check it out. The Email:rod@bransontractors.com.au Let me know if this information is correct. Took about 10 days to get here from Australia. Bob.
