500 hrs on the engine.

The local shop tells me it the rings on #3 cylinder are shot...Air blows right through to the oil pan...they say it got over heated some how, even tho the coolant, water pump and air filter were all working like they should. He thinks the head gasket could be blown and by the time he fixed the "what if's" it's more cost effective to just get a crate motor. Now, Kubota wont sell me a new motor unless I prove I destroyed my old motor by drilling a hole in the side of it.....

Yes Kubota parts man, I need 4 hoses for my fel. What!
You want me to put holes in them before I can get new ones from you.
Why do you think I am getting new ones, they already have holes in them.
I suppose you want me to drill hole's in the old washers before you will sell me some new washers. :p :D

weberoje,
First let me say I mean no offence, but I think your mechanic is either incompetent or lazy.
Rebuilding that engine is an easy job even for a simple mechanic, and all the parts it would need would run you less than $1500 (and that's if it needs everything) I'm betting more like less than $500 in parts for pistons, rings and gaskets.

Heck throw it on a flatbed and send it on over here and I'll do it all for less than 2K, no where near the 4k you'll spend for a new motor. ;)

I was told that it has to do with emissions. The federal government will only let your dealer sell you a new non tier 4 engine if you can prove the old engine is destroyed keeping it from being reused without tier 4 crap. Wolfman is spot on on all counts. I got the workshop manual and did it myself. If I had known that he did mail order, I would have bought a bunch of postage stamps.

Wow...OK, I didn't realize the "helpful hand" of our government extended this far.

I found this site which discusses the different tiers: https://www.dieselnet.com/standards/us/nonroad.php

I fear for my daughter, and what kinds of "freedom" will be mandated upon her in the future.

Am I just an old curmudgeon (50 years old), or did my generation just happen to get front row seats to the downfall?

Wolfman....I would be over there in a heart beat! love Idaho! Beautiful state and its a nice road trip from western Washington....But I traded it in my old 24 and bought a new BX25 tonight. I didn't want the headache of all of it..... I'll be back digging up/pushing dirt tomorrow just because....I CAN:D

And about destroying the engine...I had three dealers tell me the same thing, I thought it was about Kubota trying to corner the market on the engines, but it is a EPA requirement....go figure...I paid for it I should be able to do what I want!
