Need some help please. I have a Grasshopper 725D with a D902-E. I have owned it for years and do religious oil changes every 100 hrs. It has about 800hrs on it. Problem is it uses oil (rotella 10w-45) about a quart every 15-20hrs of operation. I have assured not external leak and there is no visible oil smoke while in operation or startup so where is it going and why? Mower has good performance and plenty of power and no other symptoms, just uses oil. Any ideas please share. Thinking the next step is the crankcase vent diaphragm but thought I would ask rather than continuing to guess. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Where do you buy 10W45 oil 😃

I would say its burning oil. Its gone 800 hours with no other problems so I would just keep it well fed.

I have a buddy that bought a 725D on a estate sale with two hundred hours on it and it used some oil too. He had no idea what brand or weight oil had been in it. He was running Rotella 5-40 synthetic as that is what he runs in all his other diesels and I run the same in my 325D and my 325D uses zero oil in 100 hours. He went to Rotella straight weight 40 conventional and after a couple 100 hours changes he can make it 100 hours without adding oil. Its down about a half quart when he changes it. His was also burning a quart every 10-20 hours. You will probably have to order the 40W not many places carry it. It is mostly used in 2 cycle Detroit engines. They don't like multi grade oil.

Super helpful. Appreciate you taking the time to reply. I will give the straight weight a try and see how it goes. Makes sense to me. I only use the mower when it’s warm so not concerned about cold starting. Thanks again.

I agree with @TheOldHokie , just keep feeding it.

It could be a number of things, but a few quarts of oil every 100 hours would not concern me personally, especially if there are no other problems.

My current truck burns about 2-3 quarts every 10K, but she's rolling up on 300K, so I guess, the saying "It is, what it is" , is appropriate.

I had an old Monte Carlo that I had to add a quart of oil every time I filled up.

(I asked my neighbors for their old oil and kept a gallon of used oil in the trunk)

That car started and ran great for years, until the trans went out.
