There are lots of tire siping threads on this forum, but I'll drop some images of my R4 tires here too and also make the claim that siping makes a big difference to traction.
My intent was to create blocks that can compress independently of the blocks around them to improve the ability of the contact patch to conform to the road surface. The grooves also provide additional "bite" of course.
