My L2350 is dead...

Just bought a '97 L2350 on Friday. Ran if a few hours, stopped it, then when I came back it was dead as a brick. The previous owner said that the ignition switch would not warm the glow plugs, and once you turned it on you need to jiggle it to make sure the fuel gauge was up and the hours running, and that if I didn't it would drain the battery.
I ran it, I stalled it out, and it died. I wasn't paying attention to the switch and figured I ran the battery down, so I charged it over night. Got on it today, turned the ignition, and I get absolutely nothing. I can get the hazards to work, but that is it. No clicking...nothing. The battery sparks. Is this the ignition switch? I have the part ordered, but could it be something else?
Help?

Have you asked the former owner if that has happened to him or her? I know that's rudimentary but I felt stupid calling a former owner of an extremely expensive guitar once but I was glad I did as the issue was solved right away and saved me time and $. Give em a jingle and see. He or she might offer to help.

Yeah, I called him and he said it was the switch. I asked what he did to start it once it was dead, he said pull the battery and charge it, which I did, and it is still dead.

First thing to do is get the WSM, aka service manual.

If the switch is damaged that will stop just about everything...well sort of.

That tractor doesn't need electric to run, just to start.
Make sure it's in neutral with the brake set, go to the starter and jump the large terminal with the small terminal and it should crank and start.

So....if the ignition switch is bad, why not replace it and be done with it? Or, is it possible that the PO is band-aiding another problem by calling it "a bad switch"?

I have a new switch ordered; I hope that is the fix.
How do I jump it? I've seen it done, but it's a different story when you have to do it.

I think this is a key phrase. It tells me that the connections at the battery are sub par. Pull them, clean both the battery terminals and the cable terminals, apply dielectric grease, reattach cables. Makes sure they are tight and cannot be wiggled.
I don't have a battery tester, but I connected jumpers to the battery and banged them together to see if I had any type of charge. They made a spark, so I assume the battery has a charge. I followed up with the connections and they are solid. I am going to try and jump the starter this morning. The ignition switch should be I'm Tuesday. If that doesn't work, what should my plan be?

I think it's already been mentioned, get a tester. You need to know where there is power and where there is none to isolate a particular component not working.

Or else you start buying replacement parts in frustration. But which one do you buy first? Oh, maybe it's just a wire!:D

I just bought a voltage tester, so I will get to that asap. The PO said the ignition switch was an issue, and if you have to jiggle the key to get gauges working and battery charging...I willing to bet the ignition switch is a problem.

All the red wires from the battery test out as working....what else can I check?
Ok,
I have been at the beach for a week, still have sand in my .........

How did you "test" a red wire?

Voltage is a description of pressure ...... you can have it and NOT have enough flow to make the starter turn over.

As for "jumping" the little post to the big one, it might not "help" the screw driver or whatever you use, but if done correctly it will not hurt it. That is assuming the tip is not used. Yes - there will be an arc, but only for a second, and in that second - several questions will be answered.;)

IT could be the switch and might be the switch, but eliminating everything else helps quite a bit! :)

I have a basic voltage meter. I tested the all the wires to and from the battery, starter, and ignition...they all came out as working, I can't say I know what voltage is running through them, but they are not dead. All the wires looked good and were connected.
As for the jumping part, I've seen it done on larger ag tractors, but this starter looks different. The big wire from the battery looks to be attached to the starter along with a smaller red wire. To the right of those is a black wire plugged into the starter...not too sure what to do when wanting to jump that. I am a novice and first time tractor owner, so I'm not too sure about what is going on.

By the way, thanks for your guys' advice and time....I really appreciate it. I saved and thought I spent wisely on what I could afford...it can be frustrating.

ok ....
look at this picture and tell me if it looks somewhat like yours?
there is another way to skin this cat too.

Take a set of jumper cables, using the red end only, place it on the large bolt on the starter(make sure the other end is someplace not touching anything)

then take the other red end - and touch the positive terminal on your battery, no need to clamp it - just push firm.

Your machine should spin and fire up.
