I still have no idea what y'all are talking about getting black oil after 4 hours.... and making it sound normal on a properly tuned diesel.
While I was up at my property today I thought about this thread.
I only put on about 150 hours all last year ... and it's only 20 hours on this round... but my oil always looks like this. I'll spend the extra $ on Rotella T-6 !

Exactly like mine looks after a year. Same greenish tint.

I don't know what to think after reading these additional posts. What I do know is that my oil is a little darker than what torch's picture. I wish my oil looked like Pau7220's! Again, I know they put Kubota 10w-30 oil in it, so I am not sure if the Kubota oil qualities differ. I did look at the oil pan this weekend and BOTH plugs had wrench marks.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. But next time, do it yourself. Pick up a filter or 2 at the dealer and pick up the Rotella T-6 at WMT, TSC, Auto Zone, etc. on the way home. Then you can compare results.

Thread kind of reminds me of my old, long gone 57 Chevy with the 283 V8. I bought a toilet paper oil filter add on for it, you put a roll of TP in a metal cannister and the oil lines went to (and from) it. Oil never got dirty, was always a nice golden amber color. What I didn't know at the time was the toilet paper was such a good filter, it was also filtering out all the additives in the oil too. Removed it when I found that out. If I had left it on, it would probably have spun a bearing.

Update on this topic. I changed the oil myself this time with Mobil Delvac 15W-40 oil. It was clear as it was in the jug after I checked it on the dipstick. However, after ~7 hours it started to darken.

Diesels with emissions EGRs have crap going through the crankcase all of the time. It will turn dark which isn’t necessarily an issue.
