I wrote that first just didn't want to push that visual.I was thinking maybe a cat!
but how does this happen on a tractor?
Is this a case of cracks forming over years of normal use, until one day there are enough of them, of some of them are bad enough that even normal use results in catastrophic failure?

Heat and a little moisture can do it, as can fatigue cracking.
It's pretty much a gunpowder result, one little start and it all goes off in nothing flat.
