Big Island Hawaii
Hello All,

I am new to this forum and the use of a Kubota tractor. I am involved is a reforestation project on the Big Island of Hawaii. We have 100 acres of land that need to be cleared of invasive species primarily guinea grass and albizia trees. I will be responsible of the use of the tractor and maintenance. I am using the LP 2572 flail to clear the guinea grass. We will be doing 10 acres at a time. I am going to start the purchase of the support items to maintain the 5400. My question is what grease gun would you recommend to maintain both the tractor and flail. Is the Kubota grease the most ideal?

The MX5400 is a 2019 with 360 hours. Purchased from Scholtens Equipment in Linden WA. Was completely gone through prior to purchase. Oils, filters etc.

Thank you,
John

Aloha and welcome John! :)

I lived in Hawaii for 23 years and spent a lot of time on the Big Island for work. That's completely irrelevant to your question but I had to get it out there.

Congrats on the MX5400. I'm a fan of the MX series of tractors for sure having owned two MX6000s (still have one). I have four grease guns including two Kubota branded ones, a NAPA one and a DeWalt battery powered model. Looking at the photo of the Kubota grease guns below, I much prefer the first one I bought on the left to the last one I bought on the right. I modified the handle of the one on the right since I couldn't stand it. I much prefer the pistol grip type which only require one hand to operate. I would say that almost more important than the choice of grease gun is the addition of a LOCKNLUBE coupler available from Amazon and similar.

Welcome John - -

What grease to use is very subjective. If you use the OTT search function for "grease" you'll likely find many debates on the topic.

I use Lucas Red n Tacky, but only because it's readily available to me. I'm more of the school of thought that any grease used often is better than no grease.

I would recommend a Lock N Lube coupler for your grease gun. They are a little pricey and have some limitations, but by-and-large make the process much quicker.

Oh no! John has no idea as to how many rabbit holes he can fall into! 😂

I buy grease from the Kubota dealer that's three miles from my house. I have the moly grease in one of the Kubota grease guns for the loader (it's almost black in color) and the synthetic extreme duty (green) in the other Kubota grease gun that I use for anything on the tractor. If you just want to use one grease then the polyurea is the one that many recommend.

But just like oil, there are lots of suitable products available from a number of manufacturers.

I love the Waimea part of the BI. I used to fly to Hilo every month, stop for breakfast at Ken's House of Pancakes, then drive to the top of Mauna Loa and then to Kiluaea. If I had time to spare I'd stop at Big Island Candies to pick up something for my wife. If my day was cut short I'd stop by Akaka Falls. Such great memmories.

If you've ever been to Montana you'll know that Waimea has a similar quality and feel.

I really hope you share some photos of your tractor at work ... that would really be something.

I echo the recommendations for the lock and lube end coupler. I have had all different types of grease guns, but after buying one i really love the battery operated guns. I have the Harbor Freight Hercules gun. For grease, j prefer and use the all purpose Lucas heavy duty green polyurea grease. I use it for everything.

I really like my DeWalt battery power grease gun. I think it matters more how often you grease than what type. Another vote for Lock&Lube.
