I had the bolt break that holds the center blade on my deck. I replaced it and when fixing it I noticed that it was warm to touch. I was keeping an eye on it after repairs and noticed that it got hot enough that you could not touch it. I replaced all the bearings and seals and refilled with oil but when I run it still seems hot to touch. How hot should this gearbox get? Could the bearing in the spindle being bad cause enough heat to make the gear box hot?

I can't give you a exact temp but I'll say the gearboxes on my 8' Bushhog would be so hot after several hrs of running they would blister you if they were touched. I have switched all my gearboxes to Amsoil synthetic gear oil and heat is no longer a issue. The same Bushhog that would blister you before I now can lay my hands on any of the gearboxes and leave them there. Yes they are warm but not to the point that you can't leave your hands on them.

The gear box on my ZD21 with a 54 inch deck would get to hot to touch after 2 hours. I just purchased a ZD326 and will swap out the gear lube for full synthetic this winter.
