MMM Greasing and Maintenance

Well I am a first time tractor owner and trying to learn all the in's and out's of taking care of my tractor and it's parts. I have a BX2670 with the front loader and 60 mid mount finishing deck. Also just purchased a 48" 3ph County Line All Gear Driven Tiller.

I was able to find information on where to grease and how to grease and how often to grease the front loader, however I can not find anything on the mower.

I am trying to determine how to grease it, where to grease, how often, etc. All the info I can get on maintaining my mower.

Also any info on the tiller would be great as well.

Like I said I am brand new at this, so please talk to me like a kid.

With the mower there will be a grease fitting ontop of each spindle the blades are bolted too. Should be three fitting one for each spindle, and I believe there is a fitting for the belt tensioner as well. For me I just keep and eye on all grease-able parts and add a shot of grease when I cant see any visible from around the moving joint.

Some things you can over grease and blow out a seal or a rubber cap.

Since it's a MMM the grease fittings could be on the side of the spindle instead of the top. Use a good quality grease prefered with "moly" and even though the initial cost is higher it will save you money in the long run. Cheap grease will run thru the spindles like water. A good quality grease will save you down time, repair cost and simple use less grease. It's much more fun working with your tractor instead of working on it.

ALSO: Check the fluid level in the gear box. Top, center.. Probably two plugs with gaskets on the back of it. Top plug is fill , bottom is for draining.

OK you have (5) zerts one on each spindle.
You will have one on each wheel,(4) but be careful they have a tendency to pull out when you take the grease gun nozzle off they are just pressed in to the wheels. Yes mine are all gone
You also have a fitting on each end of the drive shaft in the universal joints (2),, they get a little hard to find cause dirt and gunk gets all over them.
And with that you have them all I think
OH And there is one (1) more on the rear of the deck, The balancing shaft for the mower deck. and its a bytch to get any grease into it. So pop a top on an adult beverage, wash it down let it dry and grease away
For a grand total of (12) grease fittings, Like Bulldog said a good grease will save you a ton down the road!

There should be directions in your MMM manual on lubrication points, as pointed out, there are a LOT of them but after you do it a few times it is no big deal, my wife now does all of our mowing and services the MMM prior to each mowing as it takes her about five hours to mow everything. The hardest are the ones on the drive shaft, but if you turn it just right you will be able to get to them. We use a long flexible hose on our grease gun.

I have several zerts on 2 different tractors that are imposable to get at with a regular grease gun coupler. To access them I use a Needle Nose Grease Gun Adapter. You need to get the right diameter to fit your zerts. These can also be very helpful getting at those pesky u joints.

Main this is make sure you grease period. As my dad used to tell me all the time, grease is cheap and parts are expensive!

Guys - I feel like an idiot asking, but....I CANNOT get one damn fitting on this BX2360 or its attachments to take grease...easily.

I've been greasing stuff for 40+ years - farm equipment, etc., but the farm was years ago. Been at the usual homeowner stuff since.

I use a 30 year old gun with rubber tube - no solid metal tubing to the tip. I can get at about anything with it. Its what I'm used to.

Do I have the wrong size tip on the gun? Metric? Or do I just need to take these factory fittings out and replace because they are garbage?

I know, stupid question, but I was bitching here about greasing it a few weeks ago. I'm too freakin old to feel like a rookie!

RCW, have you replaced the coupler on the grease gun? Most (not all) of the time the coupler will be worn out instead of the zerk itself. If it was me I would try that before I started replacing metric fittings. JMHO

I have:

* 1 zerk for each of the 3 spindles (on top of left and right spindles and angled fitting at base of gear box for middle spindle).

* 1 zerk on tensioner puller and 1 on tensioner arm

* 3 zerks on the PTO shaft (2 u-joints and 1 mid-arm)

* 4 zerks on anti-scalp wheels (1 on each wheel)

* 1 zerk on front deck roller

That's a total of 13 grease fittings just for the mower deck. I grease every 10 hours of use (more or less depending on whether I see grease or not).

Hi, to add to what Skeets said as far as when you grease the deck wheels. The fittings pull off with the grease hose, on mine they where threaded but the factory didn't screw them in enough try srewing them in further, it worked for me I haven't lost one since.( plus I'm more careful).

Take a look at Alemite and Lincoln and other known name brand lube supply companies.

Find their catalog sections on grease gun adapters and snouts.

Use a flex hose and one of the 90-degree 'Z'-type swivel snouts.

You should be able to get onto virtually any grease zerk.

Grease guns are cheap: keep one with a hard pipe tube and another with a fiex hose and swivel adapter.

If you can, lay hands on a pneumatic grease gun. Makes all the difference and makes greasing a couple dozen zerks go faster and easier.
