Mid mount mower gearbox issue

It's ugly - my mmm locked up today, when I took the cover off - it was ugly mess of metal wrapped around ball bearings, some bearings apparently missing - not sure where they went, ring spacers all broken and here and there - just a giant mess.

Is it possible to repair cost effectively or would I be better off finding a used bush hog?

Rebuild unless the housing is severely damaged - if that's the case I'll buy your deck for parts (just picked up a RC54-71B with grass catcher, but wanted a 60") - how much do you want for yours??


This doesn't look the same as your pictures, I think your deck is closer to mine, but for the sake of numbers here is a breakdown for a RC60-72H

I would estimate roughly $75 for rebuilding seals and bearings. Now if you have to replace gears, add:

Just curious. Did you ever service the gear box (oil change)?

From the photos it looks like it was dry inside.

Really does not matter. Either one will do the same thing if the gearbox is run dry. Also, inspect the two shafts before you spend any money on the other parts.

I got out the upper bearing - the angle gear looks fine. So I think the upper bearing and the lower oil seal (that originally failed, leaking out all my oil) are my problems.

What I need to find is an online distributor that sells parts for the RH60-71B That is where I'm having problems. I cant find specifically RH60-71B schematics and parts. I can find parts (including the bearing and oil seal) for the RH60-72 but I dont know and cant seem to find the answer that that is the bearing and oil seal that will fit my mower deck.

Does anyone know where I can find these specific parts?

I didn't find your deck on KubotaBooks.com, so call a local dealer and have them give you the part numbers. Then go-to ColemanEquipment.com and enter those part numbers. You can buy from them as well. I rebuilt my whole B2150 through them.

I may be just guessing but I think your deck shares the same gearbox and spindles as my RC54-71B which does have a parts manual on the KB website. Dealer can verify.

As of this morning, I called Messicks.com and found out 'user error" of their website - yep - I was entering a model number in the parts search - that is why the mower deck came back as unlisted.

They got me straightened out and I got my new shims, bearings (upper and lower) and new oil seal ordered.

Prior to this - I pulled my gearbox off, cleaned it up, inspected shafts and angle gears for damage - thankfully found no visual damage to the gears or shaft.

5-7 days I should have my new parts, reinstall, fill with oil and get back to work and start being a little more pro-active on maintenance checkups. I keep check on the tractor oil levels, front and rear axles/hub, transmission, engine oil, etc but just never crossed my mind to check the mower deck gear box.

Once it is back up and running, change the oil after no more than 50 hours. Spend the extra few dollars for synthetic gear oil. You can most likely get two fills out of one quart.
