I am having trouble finding what the difference or the meaning of a M8 x 1 vs a M8 x 1.25 Grease Zerk fitting. What does the last number mean (the 1 vs 1.25) is it the length of the thread or the cut or taper of the thread ? Thanks

It is the thread pitch. In other words in American it would be Coarse or Fine Thread. Metric, I believe has 3 different pitches 1, 1.5, 2.

Lot more than 1, 1.5, and 2. I just found this chart and it kinda blew my mind.

Thanks guys. No one a my local [Napa Auto Parts (its 30 miles away) ] knew, of course it was a Saturday, I took in my original and they wanted to sell me a M8 x 1 grease zerk. As they didn't stock the M8 x 1.25. I then went down the street to O'Reilly auto and the fella was really helpful I mean he really tried to find the grease zerk for me. But only had the M8 x 1 grease zerk I was impressed for all the time he spent looking for me. I ordered 10 M8 x 1.25 zerks in a 10 pack. From Grangier for like 2.96 and 11 bucks shipping should them in two days, Saving me a trip to town and 5 gallons of fuel. Bill

This is a classic case of Japanese standard (JIS) versus European standard (DIN) thread pitch. At least it is better than the British motorcycles from the sixties with three different thread standards: DIN, Imperial and British Whitworth.
