Hey, just had an idea. Well, really it's from a forum I was on a while back. What if there was some way we could put a link to a map that showed members location? Members wouldn't automatically be placed on it, but rather, each member could choose to be placed on said map. Just so we can see whose nearby so we could get a helping hand should the situation warrant. Or to be able to increase the opportunity for members to meet in person? If memory serves, that forum made you be a member to be able to view it so that those with foul intentions were less likely to be able to just look at a map to see where all the worlds best tractors are located. I did a quick search of the forum and didn't turn up anything for this type of thing or a suggestion about it just so I didn't double post. If it's already been discussed then I'm sorry, it wasn't intentional. If it isn't a feasible option then that's perfectly fine, just thought I'd throw the idea out there.

I'd vote for that idea - lots of folks are in my backyard so to speak and I would like to catch up with them! - but you know in the perfect politically correct world that it could not happen.

Someone would beaauch about something, and once again those few will ruin it for those many that wish for it to happen........

If it could be a possibility - those that have a log-in and password would be the only ones that could see it. It could be an option - much like showing your birthday or how old you are.

Along those same lines, any new poster needs to have a screening - their first post has to be "looked at" to eliminate spam....then again I havent seen much of spam lately....someone must be doing a good job!:)

Well, anyone can get a user name and password.
That is how they post spam!
Someone can post a fake question and pass the spam test and they are in.

most of the spam is bot formatted - the info is so badly written, no human could put those words together! :D:):)

It is usualy written by a person who does not speak english.
They convert their language into english but do not use english grammer.

There also is the bot buster picture as well. ( that is hard for me to figure out sometimes!)

All someone who wants to acces the map is get a disposable email, copy a question ( as there are 1000's on this site to duplicate) and they are in!

I think county or township level would be sufficient and sufficiently safe. Further contact could be my private messages. Just my thought.

I'd have to be in two places... I'm stuck here in California for a few more years but my ranch and my Kubota is north of Abilene, TX!

Good point! Keeps exact location off the map, while still giving members the chance to see who's nearby and more opportunity to meet. Maybe having the closest big town/city as the marker?

Long distance relationships are hard, but, from what I've heard, separation makes the heart grow fond. :D

I think that it would be a great idea, as a newbie to tractors & Kubota in person advice would be very beneficial. Also helpful in the classified section for buy/sell.

But some of the best help can be states away or countries away, this is the glory of the forum and technology.
Some of us can help fix things from a distance. ;)

Don't get me wrong I'm all for meeting new people I've meet a lot of members near me and a few from around the globe, still need to meet a few more!

I think I know how to set up the map, so give me a few days to see if I can work out the details.

I'm right there with you on that one Wolfman, 'the glory of the forum and technology'. If it wasn't for that, I think I'd be screwed. :D I just wonder if the map might bring more of a sense of 'family' to the dedicated group.

Also, knowing I have a fellow Orange Addict nearby might may make me feel a smidge less crazy.

From what others have said it is not that hard to do with google maps

http://www.wikihow.com/Tag-Places-on-Google-Maps

Like to see this done by a dedicated LONG TIME member. They would be our official ORANGE MAP MAKER:D He/She would have users here PM them an address in their city. NOT their own address so you don't advertise your Kubota location to thieves . For Shitz and Grins I'd suggest an address of a someone you really hate in local politics :D, a nasty neighbor, your ex etc. In all seriousness though better would be a local Kubota dealer or similar Tractor supply/dealer location that has treated you good.

While I would suggest we keep the Orange Map Maker it in the OTT family; suggest it not be a family member who is already rather loaded with OTT responsibilities like Mod's or an Admin.

SOOOOOOOO who is willing to be the OMM for OTT?

PS- this person would also be required to share the Map's log on info. with Mod's and Admin in case they retire, or abandon the project so the responsibilities can be passed on to someone else. To do this with google maps make a new google account just for mapping purposes and do not use it for anything personal.

I would be willing to take it on, but I don't think a week or two as a member qualifies as long term.

Though it is not my decision alone... how long have you been a kubota owner/operator?

How is this project going? I would like to see if there are any members near me, at least to the County level if not just forbearance state level.

Sorry to say, I don't think it will happen. :(
I got to many negative responses to the idea of this.

Thank you anyway. The idea sounded good to me but I can see where it could be problematic if one wanted to ensure privacy and security. These days it seems that the risk outweighs the potential benefit. I get that.
