This is why I love this forum, great advice from great people, actually it's more like one big family. Thank you all, you've given me lots to think about.

My wife and I are in our 60's and live on 52 acres of hilly Vermont woodland that my folks bought in the 1964 as an escape from the city.
Long twisty driveways to plow, down trees to clear, firewood to cut, etc. etc, you all know the drill.
My 95 year old parents live down the road and they have no plan to leave, at least not in this life; consequently we are also here for the long run.
The weather that we have had this month [3rd snowiest November since 1886]
is enough to make the hardiest Vermonter think twice about leaving at least for the winter but to us, there isn't a better place to live, raise a family and pursue ones dreams.
While we are still relatively healthy, I feel for you guys who are pressed by the needs of the body to consider a move to "softer" climes.
All the best in whatever choice you make.

Bearbait, we have so much in common!! My wife and I have been married 39 yrs. and also have no kids. Both my parents are gone and the mother-in-law has been in a nursing home for about 35 yrs. I worry about if something happens to me what will she do, I plow snow, cut grass, fix drive, cut firewood, etc. and she enjoys the luxury of being doted on 24-7. I told her if something does happen, sell everything (her brother is a CPA and can help) and buy a condo so she won't have all the maintenance problems. Think hard my brother up north, and remember we're all here for you as a sounding board.

Bearbait, your post got me to thinking. We have no "human" children either, we have some real estate rental properties.

We have specified under "specific gifts" a specific veterinary clinic to place our pets in a good caring home. The trustee pays for the boarding and care cost until a home is found. Trustee distributes to each caregiver agreeing to care for pets, to reimburse for care, feeding, veterinarian bills, etc....with a lifetime maximum of $5000 per pet. If no pets, the money goes to a charitable foundation we specified.

You can literally cover all your bases with this tool. All the variables are at your control...NOW, before any health problems overcome decision making.

Our neighbor and good friend suffered from Alzheimer and we made every decision we could to make things as he wanted, to stay home. Those few years brought us to the conclusion we needed something to protect our wishes.
