Anyone around in 1964 probably just laughed about that one. The one in 1964 was 9.2 and part of Anchorage went into Cook Inlet. In fact, you can still see tops of sunken buildings at low tide.
When I was stationed in Japan, we had quakes like that about every year and the little ones in the 3, 4, & 5 range very often. When my parents were visiting one year, we had a 5.3 and we just acted like nothing happened and my mom was white as a ghost. Of course that is why I would only live as high up as the 3rd floor. After each quake greater than 4.0, the elevator would automatically go out of service until it was inspected. Going down 9 flights of stairs isn't bad but going up is a different matter.
