M9540 Wheres the orifice?

Hi all

I am working on a friends M9540. The AC compressor is locked up. My intent is to replace the compressor and dryer. I have the service manual. I am trying to find the orifice or expansion valve to determine if it is something that should be replaced. There is no mention of either in the service manual nor is it evident by looking at the system. I am wondering if maybe the expansion valve or orifice is built into the dryer.

If you are familiar with this system and have some advise (or a diagram of the system showing all the components) it would be appreciated.

The expansion valve is in the AC unit.

There is quite a few different models and options, what exact model are you working with, serial # too.

I do not have the serial number. I only know right now that it is a 2012 M9540. And after looking in another section of the service manual, it appears that the expansion valve is mounted to the top of the dryer. I suspected this, but wasn't sure. Does this sound right?

Also, with a locked up compressor, do you think it would be necessary to change the condenser also? or do you think the dryer would trap all the contaminates?

With a locked compressor, I would be worried about loose stuff in the system.

I would go ahead and replace the expansion valve and dryer.

The evaporator and condenser I would blow counterflow with nitrogen, and a rag to catch any junk coming out of either. Then you can make a decision about whether to replace - more likely not unless you find a leak later.

When you change the compressor you may have to add or remove some oil.

With a gauge set and nitrogen regulator/tank you can check for leaks at pressure.

Then vacuum down and hold vacuum for at least on hour, pulling all moisture, before charging. Micron gauge will tell you if condensibles are still in the system.

If the compressor is locked it's very likely that there will be some junk in the system, you need to flush the entire system and then add new dryer and vacuum it.

you are correct. I saw a picture and thought I saw something that I didnt. Anyhow thanks for clearing that up. I see now where it is located.

Are you sure this diagram is for the M9540? when I look for that part number for the expansion valve the closest one listed is M9000. I need to ensure I order the correct part number for the M9540 expansion valve.

Its not that I am doubting you, I just want to be clear.

I'm 100% sure, it's off of Kubota's site.
But like I said earlier I would need to know the exact model and serial # in order to give you the exact part#, as there is 22 different versions.

Can you turn it forward/back by hand, I've seen one lock up due to overcharging, its a very small system.

I did not try. But when the clutch kicks in after turning it on, the pulley is just locked up. Belt slips. Ill put some gauges on it and see. The tractor is 30 miles away.

The extent of my conditioning knowledge is with GM systems. I didn't know a compressor would lock up with overcharging unless they ended up with liquid on the gas side. But i'll check it out before I have him order those parts.

I went to top up a 7040 that was down and it took just a tiny bit of 134 to go from non operational to spot on, I was shocked, it was less than an ounce or two, cars that are down take 8-15 ounces. Might be just debris in the clutch too, seems its possibe to fill it with dirt.

Wow. I got expansion valve for around 30 bucks an dryer for 19$. Dryer crossed withToyota sienna minivan.
