2600+ hours, S/N 50950. Deteriorating problem with manual shuttle locking in FWD; eventually transmission locked in FWD, towed backwards to unlock. Split the tractor. Rear synchronizer in transmission badly worn. Parts to replace one synchronizer set = $1,750.
Can the reverse synchronizer be removed without affecting transmission operation? Understand it would be necessary to full stop before shifting into REV in this case.
Are the pins and rear synchronizer necessary for proper positioning of the forward synchronizer set?

I feel your pain. I had to R&R reverse synchronizer on my M4900 about 15 yrs ago. I traded the M4900 for a M7040 with hyd shuttle.

We use hyd oil from Tractor Supply. It was serviced about 2 yrs ago, <400 hrs when we replaced the clutch & throwout bearing.
That would explain why you have so much wear with that few of hrs. Friend of mine was using the same fluid in his 8540. His trans and hyd system was shot with less than 3k hrs and he changed fluid every year.
