Just bought a used 7040. The pto sensor must be bad always says off. Trying to get some stuff done before I have time to fix it or look up how to. In 3 gear what RPM and speed do I need to be in the 540 rpm on pto. Will be running a 7 ft cutter to try and knock down broom straw on some land we just bought.

PTO speed has no dependence on what gear you are in , it's only dependent on RPM of the motor.

Are you saying the Tach does not work?

PTO operation is 540@2295RPM
Max rated RPM is 2600RPM
so guess at a little less than max RPM.

Now as far as your problems with anything on that tractor, you need to understand the M7040 has been in production for longer than any other model that I can think of, and it has 20 Sub models, so saying you have an issue with your M7040 is like saying you have an issue with your Chevy.
If you don't know the exact model designation, post your serial # and we should be able to figure it out for you.

Here are the models' and don't just guess! ;)

What Wolfman said, just pick the proper RPM and keep it close, my M8540 540 is 2250, so I keep it at or close to it when running a rotary cutter. A bit off one way or the other isn't going be a big deal.

Thanks this is exactly what I needed and not sure what I want thinking on gear and speed. The tractor on the frame tag has m7040D on it any idea on the speed sensor that says off. If it's a cheap easy fix I'll do it but may not be worth it.

The M Series has a needle indicator tach and digital PTO speed readout, so they are separate. I really wouldn't miss the PTO readout.

Thanks TripleR,
I didn't catch the dual speed sensors.
If the engine Tach is working then it's the PTO speed sensor that is out.

P/N T1060-18660
And at $95.00 + for the sensor, I would just go by the engine RPM. ;)
