M7040 Engine Oil

I'm now the semi-caretaker of an M7040. Needs an oil/filter change. So I went to the WSM to see what the oil requirements are. I was expecting latest diesel class of x viscosity. But there's this note:

So I may need to know if the engine has external EGR or not? Did some 7040s have it and some don't? Why is the oil different?

On the original subject - viscosity. The WSM calls for 10W30 for my climate. But the stores around here are full of 15W40 with limited 10W30. What do you think about using the 15W40 instead of the recommended 10W30?

Walmart has this - have you seen this in the local stores?

Just make sure it is FOR diesels!

and it should meet all those specs - I use it year round - from mid teens to high 90's

Let me simplify this for you, if possible: [EDIT] the following statement was improperly made as it applies to gasoline oils. I should have used API standards for illustration. See further post below for my correction.]. ALL subsequent ILSAC oil specifications will meet all previous designations. This means the CURRENT (or future) designations will meet all those old, obsolete ones. Currently it’s “SN” and that should remove any doubt you have and it makes NO DIFFERENCE since ”SN” came out what kind of emissions control you may or may not have (in other words, it makes no difference if you have an EGR internal or external.... use the current or later version of DIESEL OIL your local supplier sells.

As for VISCOSITY: If you read your manual you will find that there are alternatives...and the common 15W30 is one of those alternatives. SO QUIT WORRYING AND BUY THE LOCALLY AVAILABLE OIL AND DON’T FALL FOR THE EXPENSIVE BRANDS...because they meet the same SN standards and are no better than the economy-priced oils that meet the SAME STANDARD. DOH.

Aren't the Sx series for Spark ignition i.e. gas engines? I thought the diesel oils are Cx series?

If not, you can buy two or more jugs and Walmart will ship it to you for free.

Yes, I was making an analogy and should have used the diesel example instead. Thanks for pointing that out. I should have used the API CK4 for a better illustration. (Note: Ford does not recommend CK4 for it’s engines. Ford states that CJ4 oils meet it’s spec M2C171-F1.)

O'Reilly had $7/gal rebate on T6 (made it a couple of bucks less than Wal-Mart), and I bought 5w40.
