After the engine rebuild I've finally put the FEL back on and redid the bushings and pins. I'm ready to use the FEL for the first time. It is so slow to raise that it's boring to watch. I looked up the specs and it says 6.4 seconds for full lift of the arms. When I tried to time the raise I stopped at 18 seconds and the bucket was barely above the hood. The curl the bucket is the same way, slow.
Here's what I've done so far and eliminated.

The lowering is smooth and fast, less than 5 seconds. So no binding of the pins, bushings or FEL frame.

Speed is slow on both remotes, lift and curl, swapped lines with both remotes, still the same.
Replaced all 4 couples and male ends, still the same. I AM ASSUMING the problem is before the remote controls.

Pump pressure at each remote is the same, 2250 psi and stays the same at idle and at 2,400 rpm

I'm thinking of making a tee connection to observe line pressure as the bucket is raising.

Is that enough pressure?
Could there be a volume problem?

Is there a check valve in the system that could be stuck?
A new pump is over $1400!! Can they be tested?
Can they be rebuilt?
I visually inspected all the lines. None look flat or crushed.

I appreciate any input or test suggestions you may have. I really need this machine to be working and I can't just throw $$$$ at it. Couplers were leaking so it was just maintenance to replace them but a pump at $1,500 is a project.

If you tested remote pressures you should have all you need to check pressures to FEL circuits.

Unplug a lift arm cylinder hose and plug your pressure gauge into the FEL valve outlet.

The cylinder does not have to be in the circuit so no Tee's needed.

Usually these problems come to be a hose in the wrong place on the FEL valve block.

With the remote pressures you have the problem is unlikely the pump. How is the lift speed of the 3 pt arms?

The 3 point arms are fast but I've never put a load on them.
The remotes on this machine feed the FEL. The lines run along the frame to the back. That's where I checked the pressure.

How many hoses connect to the FEL valve. 6 or 7?

Where does the ps get its pressure?

This is what you should be using to check pressures.

FEL valves are mounted to the side of the transmission. 4 hoses off the top go to the 4 remotes on the back. I'll have to see it there are any other hoses underneath.
The P/S has it's own pump and reservoir.

4 lines on top and just one supply line on the underside.
I hooked the gauge in on a tee today. While the bucket was raising slow the gauge tried to move a little, maybe <100 psi, but when it got to the top it took another 20 seconds to max out at 2250 psi. I had a volume problem not a pressure problem.
First thing I did was to pull the new filter I put on when I did the engine overhaul. On the inlet holes of the filter and in the line feeding the filter I found what looks to be old gasket material. All this paper over the filter inlet and in the line feeding the filter housing. Cleaned out what I could and replaced the filter.
8 seconds from the ground to the max lift. That's with me counting. The spec calls for 6.4 seconds. Close enough for a 33 year old machine.

Hello
What you found is the lining from your brakes. I would not let this go to long. What will happen is you will soon have metal to metal on your brakes. Then you will have a mess. I have repaired many of the older Kubota's were this was not taken care of. You end up with fine metal in the whole system. It is not to bad of a job now. You need to remove the axles , and replace the brake disc.
Good Luck Lance

100% agree with Lance, fix it now or you'll have some real serious issues down the line. ;)

Lance, Thank you for that information. Not what I wanted to hear but certainly what I needed to hear. I have a couple of questions about the process. It looks to be like my MF165 except those are dry brakes.

Not knowing where the lining came from I'll do all friction material both sides.
Do I need to do the metal spacers too? I'd like to get normal parts on hand before I tear down in hopes of being able to complete the job when I start it.
Can the axle housing be removed with the axle still in it as an assembly? If I have to pull the axles I'll replace the seals.
If I remember the loader frame bolt to the axle housing so that'll need to come off again too.

Hello
The brake setup is much like the MF 165. Normally the steel disc are fine. I would replace the seals and gaskets. Also replace the small oring on the brake actuators, round rod that the brake pedal moves .MF 165 is a great tractor. Yes the brakes are dry, but the problem was they were always wet . How many hours are on you M 5950 ?

I’m not sure of the hours. 4,712 or 14,712 maybe 24,712?
I did the pistons and rings and rod bearings. Bearings were 0.01 and head had signs of a dropped valve so i was not the first one in there for sure. It’s an early one. Maybe 1985.
My MF165 had water rust the balls into the plate and oil leak onto the discs so technically they weren’t dry either.
I’m not planning on pulling the axle out of the housing. Is that possible? Should i just to change the seal?

Hello
You can replace the brakes without removing the axle. You can’t replace the seal without removing the axle from the housing.

This is why I posted what I found in the hydraulic system filter, and now a FEL thread turns into a brake repair job.
Lance, Thank you for taking the time to tell me what I found. Dead on!

Is this normal for the casting to look like it was drilled for clearance?

IMG_0388.JPG

The lining was gone. About 1 3/4 of the 6 surfaces were loose and gone.

IMG_0389.jpg

The board was to lift the fender and push the loader frame down.
