The dealer service informed me today that my M5700 has sustained cylinder wall damage that will require a long block replacement engine, The damage they think was caused by an either explosion, which to my knowledge has never been used in the engine. Tractor has been used about 250 hours since purchased used (226 hours) in 2005.

Any other explanation for damaged to a localized area ?
not a groove all the way around the cylinder and there is some light vertical scoring.

Are there any other options to repairing cylinder wall damage to a non-sleeved engine?
Is a short block available?
Are rebuilt engines available? If so from who? no luck so far on internet search.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck. That sure is a small amount of hours to go thru that type of damage. Did it drop a valve or are they still intact? Exactly how bad is the damage and what did it look like?

Damage is located near top of cylinder wall and is several thousandths deep, about 1/2 -3/4 inches long. very rough feeling, There is no ring around the cylinder. No dropped valve.

Service tech says that it is explosion damage, normally caused by using starting fluid. No starting fluid has been used in this engine since I have had the tractor.

Took it to the dealer for gray ehaust smoke and oil blow by on side of engine.
Blow by was caused by a damaged PCV hose.
Gray exhaust started last last summer. Have noticed a slight loss of power.

Is there a source of remanfactured Kubota diesel engines?

If I have them just put the back engine together and I run it, what is likely to happen?

If they have already told you the only choice is a long block I think I would put new rings on that one piston if it was good and run it. Sounds like it was still running pretty good when you brought it in. To me if the dealer is saying long block they are telling you the entire engine is going to be replaced. You no how it was running before. Do you think it was running bad enough to need a new engine.

I HATE EITHER ! ! !!!!!!!!!!!

I really think that stuff is for incompetant fools. If an engine won't start there are reasons and the best simple way to start the engine up is to address the condition effectively. Did I mention that I hate either?

Vette,
It sounds like you got the raw end of the deal from the previous owner. I bet they squirted the laughing gass in there and didn't blow the engine but did stress and fatigue it. Unfortuneatly through your normal use the damage quickly progressed :(

This is a very sad thing and I wish you good luck!

If it doesn't have sleeves it should be able to be bored oversize. I don't know why they haven't told you this.

I've never heard of ether putting a scratch in a cylinder unless it broke a ring on the piston. If it is a narrow scratch I would put rings in it and run it. I have a B6100 that is so worn out you can't stand down wind of it because of the blowby. It starts, runs and does anything I want it to do. It doesn't have any gray smoke in the exhaust.
