My 2007 5040 was running fine I pulled in the drive let sit for 30 minutes returning to tractor went into reverse no problem then when I attempted to shift into forward it would not go into forward or reverse. I found that with the gear shift in neutral I could shift the forward and reverse lever with no problem but with the lever in forward or reverse I could not shift the gear shift lever or with the gear lever in gear I cannot shift the forward or reverse lever all of this with the engine running but I turn off the engine everything shifts correctly. Can someone help out please?

It sounds like your clutch is not completely disengaging.

It has a linkage or cable problem.
The shifter on these uses a cable and rod at the same time, one out of adjustment, disconnected or broken will do exactly what you state.

If you tell me the exact model I might be able to point you where to look.

Sorry need a little more info to go on, there are just too many sub models to narrow it down.
The serial # will tell you/ us what model and sub model it is.
