Further my previous thread: low compression and leakage past rings on one cylinder

Cylinder 6 bad leakdown test results, worn/broken rings in that cylinder, with carbon build up and blow-by. Tractor not worth reconditioning so I have decided to keep running until it gives up.

Question: is it worth decarbonizing the engine or leave it alone and run it? If it has stuck rings (to the piston) from carbonizing and causing the blow-by could it free them up somewhat. If it has broken rings I wonder will doing this will shorten its life even quicker. Previous owner didn’t change oil. I have now put in a good quality Penrite 15w 40 mineral in it. Would a synthetic be better to use and would this help free the rings over time if they were stuck, or am I grasping at straws?

Synthetics are good for long interval between changes…but are poorer performers when it comes to dissolving carbon and absorbing/carrrying-away contaminates. (This is why Mobil recalled their aircraft synthetics and paid for a lot of aircraft engines over it.)

In addition to wondering about what kind of oil to use you may get some help from "Sea Foam". It is recommended for cleaning up diesel engines.

Thanks Roadworthy, I am in Australia and I would have to get " Sea Foam" shipped in. There is a company here called cost effective maintenance that sell two products for carbonized cylinder heads and stuck rings, they claim 80% success of improved compression. Its a decarboizer that goes in the fuel and their main product is a Flushing Oil Concentrate (FOC) is based on a detergent type product. They say "As you know engine oil has detergents, so ours is similar, however, where it’s different is that it targets the heavier type deposits including baked on carbon around piston rings." They run this through for 45 minutes and then you do an oil change. engine problems solved - Cost Effective Maintenance Some say it works great others warn dont use a detergent because it flushes junk through the crank bearings. You tube Eric the car guy says just spray water through the intake, very carefully of course. It hard for me to decide whether to do a quick decarb with something like your seafoam, detergent engine flush to try free up rings, or leave it and just keep doing regular oil changes with a good oil
