Looking to adjust the PTO clutch on an M4050. I have the Workshop manual, but it states pretty simply that if you have greater than 3/4" 'PTO clutch lever free travel' to 'Adjust by altering the length of the clutch control rod'. Has anyone completed this task? This being an older, short production model with an independent clutch (lever), there doesn't seem to be much info readily available. I pulled the cotter pin and washer from the top of the clutch control rod, but there isn't enough play at the bottom to slide it off the PTO clutch lever. It seems like either the entire clutch control rod or PTO lever needs to be removed to adjust? Thanks!

A photo of the linkage you are talking about would help.

You don't need or want the bottom off, just loosen the lock nut then spin the top of the shaft to adjust.

As you can see below, its a 2 piece rod. I am assuming that the top (cotter pin & washer) should pull off so the shaft can thread in or out, but it didn't come off without jamming on the stud, and I didn't want to force it. Thanks!

OK guys, jumped in tonite and pried the top of the clutch control rod off the PTO lever. Gave it a few turns and reinstalled. It took a good bit of leverage to remove and put a slight bend in the rod, but all in all went pretty smooth. Best part is after I fired up the tractor, pulled the clutch lever, and engaged the pto h there was no grinding.
