M4030SU problem with PTO Clutch

Hi,
When I mowed yesterday I discovered that the PTO was still turning/mowing when I tried to disengage it via the PTO Clutch Lever. I can’t find any procedure for troubleshooting or adjusting it in my binder of Workshop Manuals. Any help is appreciated.

You would adjust the PTO clutch lever much the same as you would adjust the main clutch foot pedal. Should have roughly an inch to an inch and a half free play when raising the lever. Free play will be the movement of the handle before it begins to get tight. You have a threaded rod that you will link them or shorten to achieve that. You also have an inspection cover on the right side that you can look at the bearing touching the clutch fingers. The main thing to be sure when you're adjusting the clutch is at when it is in the engaged position that the bearing is not riding on the clutch fingers. Biggest problem I have found with these hand PTO clutch levers is that people tend to pull them up to disengage the clutch and leave them there. This is just like riding the main clutch with your foot. You want to disengage the PTO with the hand lever when you're finished take the PTO out of gear and return the lever to the down position. Great old machine.

Thank you for the help! I didn’t know about the proper use of the PTO Clutch Lever. I’m sure that’s why it quit working. I hope I didn’t ruin it. I hope I can adjust it back to functioning properly.

The throwout bearing has froze up and burn the fingers off the clutch. You will need to split the machine and replace the clutch. This is probably a result of running with the clutch lever up thus disengaging the PTO all the time. As I mentioned earlier in the future bring the clutch handle up when you're finished using the PTO and take the PTO shift lever out of gear and put the handle back down so the bearing does not turn all the time.
