I have the shop manual and the technical manual, but not the operating manual so I don't exactly know how the PTO operates. It doesn't seem to matter if the clutch is on or off, either way when I pull the lever to engage the live PTO there is a grinding of gears, so I figure something is not correct there. Does anybody know the correct way to operate this PTO? Also, when I bought this tractor the PTO clutch was just stuck in the on position, and we lubricated it and got it unstuck so that I could take it to off. Do you think something else may be stuck? It sounds just like trying to go into gear without putting down the clutch. Thanks for any info!

Your tractor has a PTO clutch lever and a PTO engagement lever. The Clutch lever is the large horizontal lever by the transmission shifter levers. You lift it up to disengage the clutch. By the way, it shouldn't ever be left up! It is the same as riding the clutch causing the release bearing to run continuously and causing a large end-load on the engine crankshaft. That is why they put a disconnect gear and lever in there, so you can lift up the clutch lever and engage or disengage the PTO then return the clutch lever to the engaged position! ( your tractor may have a ground speed position on it to! I'm not sure about the Kubota's but most of the Oliver/ Cockshutt/ White tractors did) I really don't know what you'd use it for!

Ground speed driven PTO good for distributing fertilizer or similar. Also seen it used distributing manure from old chain-bottom cart----faster you drive the more material is moved, slower you drive then less. Idea is to get about the same tons per acre (set by opening/closing outlet slot) regardless of how you drive.

The past owner had it stuck in the up position, with the PTO light on the dash lit. SO when I got it unstuck and down, the light went off. But it doesn't seem to make any difference on wether I can get the PTO in gear, either way it grinds but goes on. That make any sense?

I think I fixed it! So the PTO clutch lever is disengaged when it is up, and for some reason then the PTO light is on the dash. Okay whatever. But so what I did was put the pto select lever into gear before starting it up, then I worked the clutch lever up and down for a while. Then I reached back and changed the speed lever a few times until somehow something or other happened, maybe something came apart?, and now I can engage and disengage the PTO with the clutch lever, which is what I was trying to do. So, that is when I stop futzing with it. I really think the clutch disc was stuck to the pressure plate a little bit. We'll see...

It's normal for it to grind just a "little" when you first engage it. My M4500 does it, makes it worse if I try to "gently" engage it. There's just enough drag in the PTO driveline to keep things spinning a little even with the lever up and the light on. As long as the output shaft will stop when the lever is up you're ok. Just make sure the lever is up when you slide the PTO into gear, it'll be fine.
