Lucas X-TRA HD poly urea grease hard to find. Anyone know if the JohnDeere SD poly is compatible to use behind the Lucas?
For use mostly in my 15' rotary cutter(we call'em shredders) around here, but if you "google it" you'll get shredders for documents etc. I've been using the Lucas green since the machine was new, and I am particularly concerned about the big CV joint on the drive line. Don't want to gunk that thing up.
I think the JD would be ok, but would like to be re assured by someone with experience, or knowledge, or both.

Just use any poly urea grease and it will be compatible with the poly urea grease you have used

I switched from Lucas to Sunoco red because I got tired of red oil dripping from my grease gun when the temp got above 90*.

As Lucas XTra HD grease is compatible with most common grease types, as it's shear stable poly, then I would use the best suitable-for-the-application alternative available. I use it for all my tractor applications, like loader and backhoe pins as well as pto shaft u-joints. It seems there's some greases (moly?) that are "too slippery" for safe use in high speed needle- and ball-bearing applications, so for the CV joint stay away from moly grease and go lithium?

My research just now on this came up with an interesting point about moly grease in bearing use.

If such greases are used in high-speed bearings, problems can be experienced with roller “skidding” where the bearing roller fails to rotate through the full 360 degrees due to reduced friction. As a result, the roller develops flat spots, and its service life is reduced."

So moly good for your CV joints? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"Greases containing molybdenum disulfide shouldn't be used in applications that see excessive amounts of water ingress as the molybdenum disulfide can have a corrosive effect of the metal surfaces, and is not suited for bearings and other components that move at a rapid pace."

Anyway, it was enlightening for me to look this stuff up a bit. But my case of Lucas XTra HD grease is only half used up so not shopping for grease any time soon!

For bearings that don't do a full spin (U joints for example) moly is great. For those that do (wheel bearings) not so much.

Thanks Paul. I emailed Lucas a while back and they replied Red & Tacky was NOT compatible with X-tra HD. ?? Maybe I need to call and actually talk to someone.

Yep. I haven't been able to find the Lucas X-tra HD anywhere for many months. Fantastic grease and reasonably priced. I actually drove about 40 miles out of my way to an Autozone because their website said they had it in stock at that location, only to find out that store had actually shut down when I got there

Just been using the Lucas Red-N-Tacky for everything now. Had been using it for years on wheel bearings exclusively.

That's my only complaint on the Green Lucas stuff, the green oil dripping out the gun. I sometimes wrap an old rag around it to soak it up. Thanks again for the input.

Perhaps they are a bit worse? I dunno. Never noticed a difference. At the end of the day, the job of grease is to release oil for lubrication. The soaps, etc, are just thickeners to hold it in place. It is the base oils and additives that do the actual lubing.

I have no doubt that I just opened a can of worms

I wasn't intending to ""pick on lucas". They make good stuff. I don't know about all greases, but out of the 3 or 4 that I use, the green is the only one that leaks out of the gun.
Not deal breaker, just get kinda nasty when ambient temp in my shop gets up to around 110 f. I keep my grease guns in a place now where it doesn't matter if they drip. Sooner or later that gets messy too.
