My BIL was doing maintenance on his L4740HSTC yesterday. He texted me indicating that one of his drain plugs appears to have been replaced with a hose from his aux hydraulics. His tractor has a third function for the loader and rear remotes. I'm not sure where the other end of that line is. Assume it's a return? He said he imagines that to drain the hydro fluid, it's a matter of breaking the threaded connection.

Sounds reasonable to me. He's calling Messicks to confirm. I'm no tractor mechanic, but I'd think that if it a return there would be a better place to tie it in. The little skid plate looks factory, so maybe it is a common thing.

It does look stock. I’d unscrew the threaded connection for hose from the rest of the assembly to drain it. Maybe a return line from the 3rd function? But I don’t know the orientation of the image either.

hmm which picture is 'right side up' ? 1st one with cover, can't drain 100% so it's probably the 'normal' one ....
also guard looks like it'd interfere with disconnecting the hose...
maybe it's better in real life ?
also wonder if there's a check valve to prevent the oil in the sump from backfeeding into the hose.

Two bolts to remove the orange bracket. When I changed the oil in my wifes car yesterday I had to remove six screws to get the splash shield off.

Absolutely zero need for a check valve.

Got confirmation this AM. Correct on draining

Ummm - you simply unscrew the swivel on the end of the hose and drain as before?????

Apparently no check valve, Messick told him to break the connection to drain hydro fluid. Both pics taken looking up at the belly of the tractor

"the little skid plate",..... has a very likely look of something custom made/sold by Specialtyrepairsandcustommods.com in Bay Roberts, Nfld.

Does this unit have an OEM 3rd function? Big K didn’t own LP when the 40 series was made. I’m betting that skid plate is OEM. Although LP probably did prove 3rd function kits for the 40 series back then. Few others than OEM or a picky owner (like me) would have that guard Orange and so well fabricated. It seems “odd” that Kubota plumbed the output line this way rather than the conventional way with the loader valve block on the right side of the machine, just below the floor board. Any other hydraulic functions on this tractor? Backhoe or other rear remotes?

You’d really have to want to put this return line in that location given how it could be easily broken off with a little loving on the belly. But hell, the way Big K has the FEL and 3rd function lines hanging off the 60 series, that certainly isn’t a design concern anymore.

The parts manual shows the OEM 3rd function going to the side of the transmission - looks like a tee in the loader valve return pipe. I dont see anything in the Kubota diagrams that looks like that underside plumbing.
