So, tractor came to me without a key. Bought a few different keys and none worked. Some were a lot more expensive than expected. In my infinite wisdom I pulled out the key cylinder to expose the contacts. I have been starting it by jumping the reds together and it works fine but no charge. So I started experimenting to see if one of the wires would excite the alternator. Success! I found it on the first try. But when charging it runs up to 16v at high rpm. I’m usually running pretty high to mow my field and not bog down. All things considered it’s functional and easy right now but I’d like it to be charging and not be all jenky. This tractor is already jenky enough and has ZERO safety features. It’s like riding around on an angry diesel powered donkey that wants to kill me.

the wires in the ignition going around clockwise from top are thick red and thin white together next to thick red with white stripe then brown yellow orange.

ideally I’d like to add a momentary button for glow plugs and starting ( push the button and twist the ignition knob) and a switch for the alternator to charge the battery.

is there something I’m missing that helps regulate the voltage to the battery?

am I missing anything like not sending power to the plugs by just jumping red to red?

lastly, if anyone knows, what are the functions of the yellow and brown wires, respectively. Lights are disconnected and there’s no there’s no other auxiliary systems to power.

in pic red is how I start it and yellow initiates charging
thanks for your help.

That is “Jenky”!

I think that tractor is very similar to an L185 (that I have)

look here in post #26 for a wiring diagram.

There should be a voltage regulator under the dash cowling. (Assuming it has an alternator)

There should be a key switch on the left side of dash and a starter/glow plugs rocker switch on the right side.

The glow plugs should have a glow plug indicator in the dash that is also a resistor (looks like a chrome ring with a hole in the middle). It will probably never glow actually unless it is pretty dark out.

Key has off, on, headlight low and headlight high (headlights are useless really except to avoid something close as you drive home). The yellow and brown wires are for the various lights.

I think you can get an operating manual at Kubota books dot com, perhaps a work shop manual also.

If you want some pictures of anything from the L185F let me know.

Oh and the key can be bought from dealer or on line. If you buy a new switch there is an option to get it with the keys also

A switch for it on amazon is $15, not worth the time trying to coble it together.

Where? I’ve looked at them 50 times and not a single one was a correct fit. Also, it doesn’t fix the voltage regulation issue. If I have to disconnect the alternator because it’s over charging then I’d much rather have a simple button and and toggle switch. Plus not losing keys.

Well then, good luck to you.

The L185 switches are available at Messicks or your local dealer

The key switch with keys is priced oddly high compared to the switch and keys separately
