Thanks to the few who only gave answers to my questions, I came looking for advice on size tractor to buy and most told me i should just hire someone to do the job i want done.. Problem is there are many many uses for a tractor on this property and there always something new we like to do and with a tractor we could do it.We used to use a 300 sized 4 wheeler but it was a older model and stopped running. and ust tired putting money into it. My father had a massive stroke last yr and while they have money they don't have thousands to fork out to hire someone every time they need a log moved out of the yard. I think i will talk to a old neighbor i forgot hes got a kubota and just found out someone else i know has one. i will see witch one they have and figure out from that the one we should get. I understand most people don't read the whole post. so i guess missed that I have already cleared 40 trees with just a chainsaw, my truck and lots of hard manual labor. within the past year.... With use of a tractor where i could load the logs into a trailer and move or just use the tractor to carry the sections of logs to where we want it sure be lot less back breaking work on me and my wife.

Seems there is no way to close your own thread here, if a mod can close it feel free to close it thanks.

You know what is funny? The difference in what part of the country you live in. It has taken us almost 20 years to grow a few trees, different species, and we have planted many that have not made it. OP is trying to get rid of trees, lol, what a difference a few thousand miles makes. Good luck finding a tractor that fits your needs, it will open up a whole new world for you.

Red,

not to pick at you at all, but remind what you asked and said:

"We have 5 acre's here at my parents house and most are woods, a year ago i started cutting down trees trying to clear about a 60ft by 75 opening. So far i have cut down with a chain saw, dragged with my truck and trailer about 40 trees. with about 50 more to go... It be nice to be able to push the trees over with the bucket of a tractor and or maybe use it to pull the tree the direction i want it to go. most trees are smaller then 16 inches ( i know cause my chain saw is 16 inch) but a few are closer to 24 inches around.. mostly pine trees around 50-75 foot tall.

once i have all that out of the way i would like to dig up the stumps ( reason for wanting backhoe) "

As far as choosing the tractor, I think you nailed it when you mentioned the "B" series - that is the perfect tractor for your needs, and it will do MORE than you can imagine, even more than your truck can!

BUT - we, all of us are simply concerned as to the method of how you are going to drop trees, all of us have dropped trees, I dropped a 24" tall oak that was about 70' tall this morning, and cut it all up, yup - sore as hell too!

WE are just reminding you about safety - and all those things that go with it!!!:)

SO - go find an old B series with a FEL , or if you can wing it, buy one that is new and hopefully get 0%, I swear to you, it will be the best money you ever spend each month!!! Even if it stays in the shed for days on end, the money spent, despite the cost is............priceless!~:):)

Plus tractors retain their value so a good investment. I had an 8N for 30 years, used the heck out of it and sold it for 85% of what I paid for it. I went new because of the 0% financing offer, open house incentives and no used inventory in my area for a B size unit with cab. I didn't need the mid PTO like you want but it may be a benefit in the future or for resale.

Reddawg17, looks to me like folks offered ideas and advise on tractors and methods. Obviously, you're under no obligation to do anything. Some just offered some tips for your safety and it will probably effect your wife and your tractor, if she's helping, and a tree goes the wrong way.

Maybe the best thing for you to do is have your friends with Kubotas (or other brand) tractors come over and visually see your parents property and ask for their personal advise on what you want to accomplish.

They may come up with something not discussed here. Be safe.

Threads get closed out when no one responds.....

I'm in a somewhat similar situation: looking for a compact tractor to mostly mow flat pasture, but also have a couple of wooded acres that I want to whittle away at (no pun intended), so I can get some sun in and grow grass there. I've had a couple of trees next to the house taken down by professionals, and they used a tractor far away from the landing zone, coaxing the tree in the right direction with a long rope. I think if I need to fell a tree specifically in one spot, that's they way I'll go.

I'm looking at used. I have found some Grand L's, 3940, 3830, 3540, 3240, etc., with less than 1500 hours on them. I think that's my best bet, rather than go new with the emissions to deal with, and I think I can get more tractor than I would if I went the new route.
