I'm looking for a light oil for both rust prevention and lubrication, mainly in the shop- for stuff like drill chucks, collets, lathe chucks, and the like. I've used up my bottle of unknown stuff I got from work. I have used WD-40, but long term, it leaves that gummy residue. A spray application would be nice, but not mandatory.
Years ago I had a partial spray can of 3 in 1 oil that seemed decent, but haven't seen it since.
Ideas?

Bill, I have used automatic transmission fluid in the past for short term rust prevention. I used a paint brush to apply. I used Dexron III for my firearms and some seldom used hand tools. It seems to resist humidity better than motor oil.

I got in a similar spot a while back, and just went with 3-in-1 in the little squeeze can.

Not sure it will fit your need, but I really like Fluid Film in certain applications.

My cast table saw is in the cellar where it's damp. The table got a surface rust that got on everything I was sawing.

A little FF on the table lasts forever, and doesn't stain wood pieces I cut on the saw.

It's also non-toxic when dry.

It does not attract dust or dirt, like oils or grease.

I've bought it at Lowes here...~ $10/can

Used ATF in the past when short of other stuff, just looking for more conenience.
As a side note, I use ATF to lube all my air tools exclusively.

I use Fluid Film on large areas like your saw, or machine ways & tables, and on exposed hydraulic cylinders that are being stored. Never tried it in anything like a drill chuck.

Probably wouldn't be my first choice for a chuck either, at least not in the tolerances you work with.

I think it might leave a little residue behind you don't want in your application.

I would lean toward the Rem Oil Fordtech mentioned, too.

I might have to get some of that myself.

I dont know how it would work on chucks and such ,but on my iron table saw table, jointer/plainer and stuff like that I am old school from my wood shop days. I used J&J past wax the tables are smooth and rest free, and wood doesnt stick like it would with oil when it gums up. I would think just some 10w mixed with some diesel or kero and then wiped down would work for metal stuff where staining wouldnt be a big deal like on wood

Any gun oil works. I put some in a needle oiler for my guns but it works awesome for oiling Jacobs chucks. Little bit on a cloth goes a long way for coating. Big surfaces I would rather have some spray.

Singer sewing machine oil.

I forgot about singer sewing machine oil. My dad used that for his carpenter tools every winter. We lived in Wisconsin and he seldom worked in December through the end of January. He use that stuff to keep his tools from rusting over the winter. Wow, that took me back 50 to 60 years ago.

+1 on Rem Oil Lil Foot. I use it on all my machine tools all the time...and the guns too.

Checked online & the local wallyworld said they had 5 Rem Oil on hand.
Weather was nice, so we all jumped in Lil Foot and drove 3 miles to pick some up.
They had none.

Check gun shops or sporting good stores.
And surely you checked in the gun area at Walmart? Its usually with gun cleaning supplies.

Also after a quick amazon check and them advertising cans for around $30 it maybe in short supply like a lot of things

Hoppes also makes a spray oil very similar to Rem Oil. It will be in the gun and ammo department at Wallyworld.

You may also want to check any gun shops or Cabala's or other sporting goods stores near you.

I use WD 40 Specialist Dry Lube. Only been using it for about two years, but so far it has worked well.
