Got this for $200. Only thing it needs thats obvious is a 1" bead of weld to fix a crack and a new belt. Im sure Ill find more problems but I think I got a good deal and this will help me mow my field faster.

What should I do to get it ready for service? Spindle bearings? Change lube in gearbox?

Its a Land Pride 25 72 Finish Mower

Grab the end of the mower blades and see if there is movement up and down. This will give you an indication of bearing wear. Grease the bearings and U-joints. At least top up the gear box with 80W90 or something close.

Nice find, even has the shields on it!

Looks like it's lived outdoors. I would change the gearbox oil, and do other stuff 'Cat said.

Also, check PTO shaft length with your tractor. Something bad could happen if too short or long.

That is a great find. For $200, looks like a great mower!

Yeah all the covers are there and seems to be complete. One of the castor shafts looks bent so ill have to deal with that too, maybe pit it in the press?. no rust throughs that I see but definitely has lived outside. Up here in Maine that makes things less desirable and therefore less likely to get stolen..lol

I have the same model bought new many years ago.

Take off the belt guards and check the pulley grooves for rust. Likely they will be rusty and should be polished up so the belt can slip a tiny bit if necessary.

Buy a spare V belt. BP158 or 5LK1610. Look on ebay.

Make certain the belt you buy has the "P" which is the Kevlar designator. Some vendors advertise the BP158 and then ship a B158. Without the Kevlar the belt life is short.

The BP158 is common to all belt manufacturers. Carlisle, Dayco etc.

If you need any documents send me a private message.

Havent had a chance to tear into it yet but at a glance the pulleys are a little rusty in the grooves so I will get those polished up as part of going through it.

OK, I took a good look at it and didnt find any major issues.

-Gearbox oil is full and dark golden, spins free, going to change it anyway.

-All spindles have no play when pushing up and down on the end of the blades, all nice and tight no weird noise when spinning.

-Idler pulleys sound like dry bearings and making noise.

-Spindle pulleys have rust and one is bent/warped (the lip of pulley not the shaft)

-Tensioner arm stud is bent/off square with deck making the pulley out of plane with the other pulleys.

-Steel stress cracked in couple places, been repaired before.

-Outer blades look like factory style blades, center is different. center spindle has a larger bolt holding the blade on

Center blade is the type designed to mulch. Called "GATOR" blades.

I think investing in three new blades will make your mower run much smoother. Your blade to the right of center looks a little bent.

The washers which center the blades, directly beneath the bolt, should be replaced at the same time as the blades. If they are not a snug fit in the blades, the blades can work loose because they are running off center.

If you have stress cracks it is possible the connection to the tractor is not correct and forces are being applied to mower deck as the tractor goes into dips.

The top link needs to be very slack utilizing the pivoting piece on the mower hitch.
