Thank you everyone, this has been enlightening.

I took both hoses to NAPA today and their assessment is that the new hose is correct, they are both JIC although to my eye they look different.

The fitting on the replacement is not only cracked in two places but also slightly deformed. They think that the dealership probably had their crimp tool too high on the fitting and damaged it. I don't know if that's what actually cracked it, but I initially put it on hand tight and snugged with the wrench and it leaked. I tightened it more to try and correct for the leak and maybe that's when one or both of the cracks happened, who knows, but apparently it does look like the fitting came damaged.

I've got a much better understanding now so thank you all.

One follow question regarding sealant: the other end of the hose (the male end, that screws into the quick connect) is NPT. Should it be sealed with teflon or otherwise? The original hose didn't have teflon there but maybe they'd use, I dunno, pipe dope or something?

Thank you!

You need to check that NAPA store off your list and keep looking. If your hose is long enough, you should be able to cut the old swivel off and have a new one installed.

Liquid teflon sealant is ok. Lots of people recommend against tape; if one little piece gets in your system, if can wreak havoc.

Post a clearer picture of the new fitting. I think your NAPA store is full of đź’©

Rigid male pipe into rigid female pipe - use sealant

Rigid male pipe into female pipe swivel - no sealant.

All JIC fittings - no sealant

Off topic, this thread just rearranged my day. Got me thinking about where, locally, I would go with an issue similar to OP's. Katy resides in no. Ms so I have learned how to get around in that limited market, but I was curious where at my west Tn home dealt in hydraulics. It's a larger market with more industry and farming. I had forgotten about Applied and other places, but there's a more local place HCI Supply. They used to have a retail hardware store with all kinds of stuff. Small hardware was fastened to boards with stock numbers, so you could see and pick what you needed. Then a counter clerk would go back and bring it out, usually with zero packaging. But that store closed several years ago.

But while refreshing my memory of exactly where HCI was on Google map, I happened to see HCI Supply Surplus right down the road from the big store. I didn't know it existed, so now I'm obligated to go check it out.
