There are twelve forward speeds. No matter which speed your in it won’t go over 7mph. Shifting with the clutch or using GST result.

I was caught out recently when my father engaged the parking brake. Tractor didn't go fast at all, then started to smell funny... DOH!!!!!!

GST's don't have a range selector, it's all done in the transmission via hydraulics.

Do you feel it change gears?
All gears?

I know of someone else who had this problem, where top speed forward seemed to be limited, but reverse still worked normally. Don't know what was wrong - it was sent to the dealership to resolve. Does your tractor still perform properly in the reverse gears?

My 1997 gst switches from high to low between 4 and 5. I’m wondering if yours has low, medium and high. If so, low and medium are working, but Hugh is not. According to tractor data.com speed 8 should be 7.5 mph.

According to tractor data.com speed 8 should be 7.5 mph.
According to my WSM Speed 8 is 7.8 KMPH not MPH. 7.8 km/h equates to 4.8 m/h.

GST Gear......... Speed (14.9-26 tires)
..8.................... 4.8 MPH
..9.................... 5.7
.10................... 6.8
.11.................. 10.9
.12.................. 16.4

Is it possible your air cleaner is restricted or poor fuel delivery decreasing HP?

I don't have a GST and have never used one, but I did read the WSM and the brief description of GST operation.

There appears to be two speed control levers that are used together to achieve the 12 forward speeds.

There is one lever on the left side near your hip which is the Main Shift Lever and another on the left hand side of the steering column (Shuttle Lever). The intellipanel can display the speed and which gear is selected.

There is a section about the various sensors and solenoids used to control operation.

Strongly suggest you consider purchasing a WSM and perhaps the operation manual.

I have GST, but it has 8 forward and 8 reverse, a bit different than the 5030 in question. On mine the shifter at my left hip goes straight for 1-4 and then it goes sideways about an inch and then down for 5-8. It automatically changes from low to high in the transition from 4-5. I’m assuming the 5030 is similar.

On your L4200 it's a 4 speed transmission with low and high.

Anyone out there have any idea as to what might be going on?
I am thinking that this problem was a more common occurance
Does the motor rev to full rpms and hold them?

It's sounding like you have a burned out or stripped splines on the mechanical clutch.

I will take another look at air filter but engine seems to be running fine.
Will double check reverse gears,don***8217;t think I have this problem in reverse.
Engine revs up and holds constant rpm, when operating back hoe she performs fine at a constant 2200 rpm.

Is there a self test that can be performed to determine if the splines on the clutch are stripped or not?
Shouldn***8217;t I have smelled something burning or heard unusual noise?
