I was mowing with the bushhog and when I shut off the PTO and idled it down it kept turning and would not disengage until I shut it off. It made some clanky gear noises for a second at shutoff. Haven't used the PTO since but everything else seems to work. Now what?

With engine off can you turn the PTO shaft more than just a few degrees in both directions before it stops? If yes, then the plates are PROBABLY okay, and the brake disc is still functioning. On the other hand, if it won't turn at all without the engine turning then the clutch could be locked/jammed up and the brake disc may have been the clanking you heard.

It'll move freely about a quarter turn. Is that normal? thanks

Yes, it should move about 1/4 turn until the brake plate hits the main case and stops the shaft from going any further. I guess at this point I would briefly try the PTO again and see what happens.

Tried the PTO as you suggested. The bush hog is removed. I stuffed a water bottle over the shaft so I could see it from the cab. seems to be turning on and off as it should. Wonder if its something to do with all the weight/momentum in the bush hog. Is it possible this is not actually a problem?

I would expect the clutch to be similar to other models, where the brake plate is spring applied and will come on as soon as the PTO is turned off and pressure to the clutch pack is released. Heavy momentum of a driven implement will try to overcome that. Some models have an over running clutch for that purpose. I don't know if yours does.

Well thanks to everybody for your time and expertise. Next PTO operation is the manure spreader so It shouldn't have any momentum issues. I'll try that and see how I do

OK now that I look around and think about it I think its possible I did that to myself. I have a John Deere MX8 bush hog and it is a big heavy thing. What I have been doing is starting the PTO at 1400 so I don't stall the engine. the mistake is that I was shutting the PTO off at 2400 rpm not understanding about the PTO brake setup so I have likely at least partially roached the brake. Good news is the bush hog is going on my new to me IH 986 and we'll try the l4760 on lighter stuff.
