I have L4701 with around 145 hours and it has developed a clunk in the front end that seems to happen when the wheel is turned and moving slowly forward or backward. I have (safely) stuck my head near the front axle while someone else moved the tractor but I can't figure out where it is coming from. Any thoughts on what might be making the noise?

 I know... From the tractor. :D Sorry, couldn't resist.

Basically guessing at this point, since there isn't a whole lot of facts to go on. But I'll throw out something in the event it helps or gets the conversation going.

1. Does the noise (clunk) seem to be in sync with wheel rotation (ie: happens once per wheel revolution or multiple)? Understanding this relationship could help pin point what component/area to investigate further.

2. Check lug nuts. Loose lug nuts are know to cause noise.

3. Lift front tires off the ground and rotate by hand... Do you notice any discontinuities in force while rotating? Any differences between wheels.

You didn't say how far it was turned. My B7100 had a clunk coming from (only) the left side wheel/axle area when turned to full lock. If you backed off the turn a little, it stopped. Turns out the stop was missing on that side, allowing the wheel to turn far enough to cause binding in the u-joint in the axle.

Most logical with the hours is a loose wheel.

Just about anything else get the dealer to take care of it under warranty. ;)

Call your dealer and see it falls into the serial number range for a PSB about loose front axle mounting bolts. Also, see if the axle moves back and forth in the mounts, there is an adjustment for the endplay.
