Hi, I’ve got a 2016 Kubota L4701 and it will only start off of starting fluid. It runs great with no problems but it only starts off of starting fluid
Everyone will tell you that using starting fluid will destroy your engine.
I see you are in California but what temps are you coping with.
Glow plugs not working would be my first guess if engine damage has not already happened with bent connecting rods lowering engine compression below what is needed to ignite diesel fuel. This is the consequence of starting fluid.

A lot more history is necessary.
Did you buy new or used, was it starting properly when you first got it and then this issue developed. Did the problem occur gradually or suddenly.
Tell us about your skill level and what if any test stuff you have. A multimeter, a 12 volt test light, an infra red temp gun, the ability to remove the glow plugs and do a compression test.

Keep using the starting fluid and your tractor will never start again without a motor rebuild. These newer tractors, particularly Kubotas, cannot tolerate starting fluid without bending rods and other components. Throw the can away and start looking for the issue.

Are there any error messages on your dash?

Your tractor is a sophisticated one with electronic common rail fuel system. An electric pump provides pressure to a pipe serving all injectors and then the engine computer sends an electrical signal to each injector telling it when and how much to fire.

If you had a previous tractor it most likely had a far different engine management system and could tolerate quick start.

Since it 'runs great' after starting, I suspect bad glow plugs,relay or controller.
IR gun will show if they're working PDQ !
also how LONG are you warming them up ?
10 seconds or a minute !

First thing to check is the glow plugs, make sure they are receiving voltage and if so are they receiving voltage for the correct amount of time, if they aren’t then check relays, fuses etc.

If they are receiving voltage, test the glow plugs themselves, you can check the resistance value with them in place but personally I’d just remove them, this will allow you to check resistance for more accurate results and also bench test them to see whether they glow or not.

If they are faulty swap them out.

Load it on a trailer and take it to a dealer or another competent mechanic.
First thing that need done is a compression test.
Ether bends and brakes parts on these engines.
And if you broken the rings / pistons, or bent the rods it will never start right.

Using starting fluid on that engine more than likely sent it to it's grave.

Your profile shows you’re in El Cerrito. It’s not particularly cold there. Highly unlikely it’s cold enough it should need glow plugs to start.

OM doesn’t instruct use of glow plugs in temps above 23F. Admittedly, I normally park mine in a building that varies from about 58F to 65F. At those temps I have never needed glow plugs to start it. Left it out overnight in the low 20’s once, totally forgot to glow it, and it started running rough but started. Smoothed out after a couple minutes.

Point being, even if glow plugs aren’t working at all, it should start with no issue if it’s over about 40F. If it wouldn’t, it had real problems before starting fluid. Addressing the issue with starting fluid was putting out a fire with gasoline.

had a 4701 show up not too long before I quit kubota, same complaints. "been hard to start so I just kept hitting it with starting fluid once running it runs fine".

Injectors were bypassing, they were bad. But the starting fluid cost him about $22,000. 4 bent rods lifted head cracked pistons (3 of them anyway), DPF replacement, whole bunch of labor to rebuild....was less expensive to replace the engine so that's what he did.
