I am new to tractors and this forum. I have 8 acres of land, closer to 5 once you account for the house, pond, buildings, etc that I need to work. I'm looking at a 2006 L4400DTF that has 39 hours. Price is 17k. Also looking at 2003 M5700 with 350 hours. Price is 19k. Both have a FEL. My primary use will be grading, gardening, firewood, mulch, moving rocks, moving chicken house, etc. I plan on also getting a 6' tiller and box blade. My question is two-fold. Which tractor would fit my needs better and do they sound like good deals. The M5700 has ag tires which I don't want but the additional power is attractive. Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

Hello,

is the M5700 also 4x4? In the web I found the difference of the power is ~16hp, 45hp to 61hp.
I see only one equipment that need's power and that is the 6' tiller. But you will not use it every year, so you could slow down the speed a little bit if the L4400 gets to warm. I would go for the newer L4400 and use the 2000$ for equipment. And you don't have to buy other tires.
But if you do a lot of firewood and you want to use the hydraulikpump of the tractor the L4400 makes 8,4gpm and the M5700 has 17,1gpm.

Maybe you think about the jobs for the tractor.

Choosing the best tractor one is difficult, we know! :p

Yes, both are 4x4. I didn't mention it but L4400 also comes with a 6' King Kutter rotary cutter and 6' KK scrape blade. These add a little more the the value although I dont really have much use for a rotary cutter.

Very good point about the 2k difference being used for implements. I just hear a lot of people say they wish they had more power so I am trying to be assured that the L4400's 45 (37.5 PTO) is enough. Thanks for the feedback.

Does the M5700 have hydraulic shuttle? if it does, that and the 5 cylinder engine make it very desirable!

If this helps I pull a 62" bushhog tiller with my L 3000 (27 pto hp) without any problem. I have even pulled a 9 or 10' trail type disc behind it. Yes, I wish I had more hp but I use mine for task better suited for a 50 hp tractor. For a place the size you are talking about I think the 4400 will be more than enough power. The smaller frame size may even be a benefit to you in tighter spots.

Yes the M5700 does have the shuttle. To Bulldog's point, I think I have come to understand that 4400 is all I need. I visited a couple Kubota dealers today and I can get a new L3800 configured identical to the 4400 out the door for $17,500. They say I don't need more than a 30hp tractor. Not sure if they are shooting me straight or just want to sell me a tractor and are pricing a model that gets them close to the price of the 4400 at 17k. They completely dismissed the M5700 saying no way I needed that much tractor.

If you're going new, pay the extra and get the hydrostatic transmission.

The Lxx00 Series have known issues with a jerky 3PH. Do some research and also have your dealer put a rotary cutter or something on and raise it slowly to see if you can live with it.

I would definitely go with an HST.

Thanks for the heads up on the jerky 3PH. It is being sold by an individual. They have a 6' rotary cutter so I will definitely get it hooked up and test it. They currently have a 6' scrape blade on it and it didn't do it with that.

Also, one thing I noticed yesterday is the paint on the hood doesn't shine like the rest of the tractor, which looks like new. They told me it had been scratched so thier son had the hood painted. Apparently they didint shoot any clear coat on it and the paint, while the correct color, clearly doesnt match due to the lack of shine. Trying to determine how much to ask them to deduct for that. I am particular about my stuff. I understand it is a tractor but I like to keep my stuff looking good.

Check You Tube, there should be some videos on there. I don't worry too much about paint either, but I would expect to pay less for one with faded paint.
