I was out Sunday cleaning up a bit in the horse pasture and while backing uphill, I heard a loud crack and the sound of fluid pouring out of the rear of the tractor. I had the back blade attached, but it was in the full up position and no other load. Any idea on what caused the issue seen below? Any chance that either piece can be successfully welded? Any words of advice besides hiding by belt and shoelaces?

That's caused by hitting something a little to solid with a little too much force or from loading too much weight on the three point and then hitting one to many bumps.

No welding is not going to fix it. You will need to get some new parts! ;)

I am no expert but I do not think that the casing metal can be welded. Someone might could get the pieces to stick together but the metal next tot he weld will become a bit brittler in the process, at least that is what I understand with this type of cast metal.

I saw another thread on another site about a center pivot steering tractor that quite literally broke in half. Once they welded it back together (very carefully I might add) they then built an external skeleton supporting frame structure from mild steel to carry the tractors weight across a larger area then the stress points of the weld at the initial break.

Man, that rear axle housing breaking like that has got to be a major bummer. I am not sure what I would do if my tractor housing started to breakup like that. Start looking for a used rear-end I guess....


Me thinks that after seeing that, I will add chains to my tractor for when I am riding with attachments lifted all the way up, I get the majority of the load off of the three point arms. Don't want this to happen to mine.

My guess and this is just a ballpark, would be between 24-40 hours if they took all of your internal parts to install in a new housing.

I would look for a used rear end, then you are probably looking between 15-24 for the rear end swap. I would try a place like http://www.worthingtonagparts.com/kubota-salvage or similar. You may have to pay freight to have one shipped to you or your dealer, but it may be cheaper than a "New" Rear end directly from Kubota.

Also, look on Craigs list in your area. There has to be some old kogger (if a reader he is one, my apologies) that spends his days buying, rebuilding/restoring old tractors and he may have one sitting in his back yard (or be able to help you source one).

Believe it or not there are people that work on tractor enough that they can tell you where to get any part for any tractor. They know all the tractor salvage yards across the country just like we know the auto salvage yards in our area. Start looking and calling, you will find something.

Very sorry to see this - unfortunately I've seen it before. Something about how your hitch was connected and restrained/operated put a huge force into the top link area.

Here's a related thread on TractorByNet. It was a local tractor so I saw it up close. The whole rear housing had to be replaced (there's no welded solution). His tractor was fairly young (happened in 2004) and Kubota helped on part cost - but it was a big repair both in time and money.

Sadly your looking at about $2500 in parts. :(
I would say off the top of my head $3500 labor to get a shop to do it. :eek:

Some would some wouldn't.

Make some calls.

They will probably give you peanuts for it, and you might get more on a Craig's list sale.

If you were closer I would have you bring it on over and I'd repair it just for fun.

I just looked on Tractor House.com , and they have 2 listed on there for the price of parts and repairs.
