So a while back our rear ag tire sprung a leak and we had calcium ballast in it so we recovered it and put in a tube and put the ballast back in the tube. Well this allowed the calcium still to work on the rim now that there was no longer water inside the rim because it’s in the tube now. So our rim rusted around the valve stem and now there is a hole and you can see the tube. It’s till holding for now but it’s just a matter of time. What are my options. Should I weld a plate over the valve stem and drill a new hole for a valve stem. Or should I buy a new rim and be done with it? What size rim do I look for? Are they 12” wide or 13” and where is the best place to get a rim.

Two years ago, when I needed new rear rims, I just had them built from scratch. 12x24 new aftermarket blanks, lugs welded on in correct locations for wheel centers. $400 for the pair.

Then, I took them to my local powder coating shop and had them done in AC cream. $180 the pair.
While I was at it, I had the centers powdercoated, too. $150 the pair.

Amish welding shop did the wheels. Had to do a bit of final grinding and clearance work before taking them for powdercoating.

I put 13.6x24 Galaxy Earth Pro 45s on them, with new tubes.
Fills up the fenders!

They took 38 gallons of beet juice (each).

If you intend to save the rim you will need to stop the corrosion or you will be replacing it sooner than you want. How you neutralize the ballast is beyond my understanding but can be done.

Then you can repair the weak spots and paint the rim.

You will need to evaluate the amount of corrosion and decide which way to go = repair, used replacements or new replacements (if they are available).
