Had an L4240 dropped at the home shop today. It feels like the 4x4 propeller shaft is slipping the splines in a coupling, not sure if it's front or rear, only when in 4x4. 2x4 is fine.

Looks like the front could be done by pulling the front axle forward and away from the tractor but not sure if the tractor has to be split to get at the rear one or if the prop shaft will pull out toward the front.

Anyone have experience with this issue?

Thanks.

Pulling the front axle would be extreme, why don't you just pull the bolts (#160) out of the propeller shaft shield and slide it back.
There is 3 spline joints, you will be able to get to the front joint and maybe the middle joint, but to get to the rear joint you will need to get extreme and split the tractor. ;)

Didn't realize that the shield could slide or that the prop shaft could move far enough to replace the couplers. Thanks for the tips.

Is there any oil in the front axle? I've seen hub seals go out and the tractor be dirty enough that the owner doesn't realize he has a leak before it's too late

Axle is full and everything in the front end feels smooth in 2x4. I jacked the front end up and spun the tires by hand and it all feels good that way as well.

When you pull the cover back you need to drive out the roll pin in the collar (#130) to slide it back and then lower the propeller shaft and remove collar.
