After being jerked around by salesman at kubota and not seeming interested in my money I started looking at used tractors again. Saw a 97 4200gst 4x4 cabbed tractor with 1500 hours. It has a fel with grapple, bucket and forks. He is asking 19k. I have not looked at the tractor yet. Just trying to get a idea if it’s even worth looking at at that price.

That is really on the high end, but cabbed GST in that era are hard to find.

23 years old, 1,500 hours. Is that roughly half of new price for a 40HP tractor (I'm not close to US pricing)? Tractors don't change much from year to year, but if you were previously considering a new machine, that's quite a lot of functionality you'd be giving up in going that old.

I guess arguably if you spent the same money on a new tractor you're only getting a BX or a B, and a 4200 is a lot more tractor.

EDIT: I see you were looking at an L4701 with grapple, attachments and trailer for around $32.5K. You're paying 2/3 the same cost for a machine without trailer, grapple or attachments, and it's 23 years old with 1,500 hours. If you can afford the $32.5K, I'd just find another dealer and buy the L4701 instead.

Yelladog, welcome. You say he ASK in 19K. Have you seen the tractor personally, or just pictures? How clean is it, and how was it used? As has been mentioned, the price seems high and it's 23 years old. Tractor with loader and bucket, then grapple and forks is a nice set of tools, but you have to decide what you want to spend, and what repairs you're comfortable doing. Things like tires and seat can need replaced which all considerable to value, but a cab should keep the seat and dash nice in this case.

How long has the tractor been for sale? Is it an individual, or dealer? How are your negotiating skills? If it's a spit-shined tractor with no paint removed from the bottom of the bucket, it has a different value then one beat to hxll.

Show us some pictures!

sorry dont know how to post pictures. D2Cat i have only seen a picture so far. it went up for sale 2 days ago. Its a individual saler. The guy is a truck driver so i cant see it in person until next week. my negotiating skills are below average.

i have been around tractors for the last 20 years. Im pretty comfortable with most minor repairs. I have never bought a personal tractor so i guess im hestiant to spend.

After looking at his listing, he is adding the grapple and the forks for an additional $1500.

He list it as 45 HP, it's actually 42 (that's engine HP). He is correct when he says, "...no computers or emission stuff on engine." You can look at any xx40 series tractor and also not get into the emissions stuff, that's from 2007 through 2013.

The xx40 series of tractors are what Kubota calls the "Grand L" series. There are many features they offer the other models don't. The Grand series come with adjustable slides on the 3 pt arms, other models have turnbuckles. Doesn't seem like much until you use them. They also have a quick adjustment to lengthen the 3 pt arms for easier attachment to lift pins on attachments, just as an example.

I did a google search for Kubota 4240 and came up with this for comparison. 2007, has 3rd function on it, 1080 hrs. Yes it's more cost, but you can also get insurance through Kubota to cover problems, I think. Also, the price listed on TractorHouse is negotiable, I'm sure. Their job is to sell tractors so they have to have some wiggle room in their listing to make people feel better when they come down some.

The L4200 on FB looks to be a clean tractor, and with the grapple it has a 3rd function on it. That's 1K by itself and it appears to be a Kubota kit, which is nice because it has steel lines not hoses going to the front.

I think his price (on the L4200) is on the high side.

Here's the link to Tractor House and the tractor I was mentioning. https://www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/191500421/2007-kubota-l4240hstc

Thanks D2Cat. Yeah I overlooked the extra for the other attachments. I don***8217;t want to offend the guy with a lowball offer or a offer I would be comfortable with.

It was originally listed as a 4060 then it he changed it to 4200
