I've had my L4200 second hand for ~1.5 years it had 1xxx hours on it when I got it. Hard starting, smoking and oil slobbering out the blow by has only gotten worse since. Pulled the exhaust manifold and cyl 4 had oil out the exhaust port. Pulled the head, oil pan and pistons. #4 had a broken top compression ring. #1 had a VERY thin top and second compression ring. The second ring was so thin none of it was exposed and had to use a oring pick to grab it to spiral it off. His son ran it more than him, think he dusted it dust doesn't break rings.. He probably ethered it when it was hard starting and broke the ring. I cut my thumb and finger getting rings off. They were all worn to the point of sharp edges. I can feel zero wear in the cylinders. Some crosshatching is still evident. I am borrowing some inside mics tomorrow to make sure. the bearings are standard and look like new ones ohmed gps and all are fine. Unable to "pop" test injectors. If it runs bad i can get to them later. Anyway to the meat, haven't went crazy cleaning the deck of the block yet (under tarp outside) I'll wash it afterwards, want the sun shining to help dry. I know what wet liners look like and these aren't it. Does v2203 IDI come with dry liners? Again not sure I'll need them, haven't measured yet. Also, all pistons EXCEPT #4 are fine. #4 Is fine too EXCEPT a few scores on the intake side (injection pump) of the piston above the top ring land. I imagine a piece of ring went out it. Think it'll be ok? By the way this is in-frame, if it was a 5k+ hour engine 100% I'd pull it all, as it stands the crank and block stays. I am disabled and on somewhat of a fixed income. To recap, plan is measure. Liners? Reuse pistons? Maybe hone cylinders, re-ring, replace disturbed gaskets and reassemble.
It was running, smoked and slobbered more blowby than exhaust. Eveen the cheapest 15 40 is over $10 a gallon. With most of it on the ground and burning some is getting expensive...
