I've been searching here but can't seem to find my answer. I want to change the transmission oil in my L4200DT and I see it's got 4 drain plugs. My question is how large of a pan/bucket am I going to need? If over 10 gallons comes out of one drain plug I'm going to have to find one large container! My suspicion is that I might find that no more than five gallons comes out of any one plug but I'd like to know that before my bucket runneth over.

I can't say for sure on your model, but on mine it takes a total of 7 1/2 gallons to fill it, there are 2 drain plugs and one will drop about 4 1/2 gallons and the other the rest.:D
I use 5 gallon catch buckets and have plug in hand to stop it up if it's getting to full.

My L3000 hold around 10 gallons and most of it comes out the first drain plug. My M9000 holds around 20 gallons so just guessing I would say yours holds about 12 - 15 gallons. If it was me I would want a minimum of 3, 5 gallon buckets to be on the safe side.

MHO, if you want it to perform like it should replace the fluid with at least SUDT2. Seeing that you live in CO. cold weather will be a factor and standard UDT will make your hyd system sluggish and stiff.

Someone posted a tip to use a concrete mixing pan:

Concrete Mixing Pan

I just did the fluids on my L3800 using a pan and it worked great. Second the recommendation on SUDT2. That's what I went with and the tractor has less whine now... more Wookie and less TIE fighter if you know what I mean... :)

Good idea on the concrete tubs. I'll be checking that out. The manual said it has just under 11 gallons. I forgot to mention it has a standard tranny, no HST, which may make a difference in the capacity.

When i changed the trans oil in my L4310 i didn't remove the filler cap and it drains rather slow. When my catch pan started to get full it was no problem putting the plug back in. Mine held 11 gallons but is a hydro. trans. I also switched from standard udt to super sudt2 and noticed much quieter and smoother running.

On the L3800 the HST is 6.2 gallons, the 4WD manual is 7.3 gallons. I know that off the top of my head (now) because I read the wrong page when I was refilling. I stopped after I had added about 6.5 gallons and went to check the fill level... no line yet, add more, check... no line yet, repeat for another gallon and... no line yet, what is going on?!? Then I reread the manual and realize that I didn't do my first check until the line was already off the top of the indicator. If I had deployed a kid on "watch the indicator" patrol I'd have caught it, that worked great for telling when I had drained enough back out...
