Hey there, thanks so much for reading this. I have a L4150 and the clutch suddenly stopped engaging. The clutch peddle goes all the way down with no resistance. I checked the linkage and it’s good. I greased the zerks. It was scary when it went out. I almost crashed into my truck because the clutch didn’t engage! Thanks so much for any advise.

Sounds like you've broken either the pressure plate or the clutch fork.
You're going to need to split it to find out.

I second the throw out bearing fork… check the shaft also.
Must times its not the pressure plate that fails if its not disengaging. Any way to grease bearing or plate to inspect before you split it?

My L2350 was staying in gear like there was no clutch. I opened the inspection plate and it was rusty. Sprayed WD40 in there on the pressure plate and drove over bumps. Reapeted that a couple times and it started working.

Thank you! Where exactly is the inspection plate? Do you have a picture? Thanks so much

The clutch pedal moving with no effect actually sounds like the machine is in neutral. The L4150 has a Hi-Lo range lever on the left side - any chance it got moved to neutral? Some L4150's had a manual reverser (shuttle) lever on the left side too - which would also have a neutral. Hope my shaky memory of this model is still working.

In actuality, if the clutch is disengaged (has stopped driving) the clutch fork likely is not involved - unless the fork and release bearing is rusted/stuck on the tube, like in the post above. It could be stuck enough to keep the clutch disengaged. Was the clutch pedal hard to push before this? The small 2-screw cover 130 to look/spray into is on the right side. Don't overdo it and "oil" the clutch disk. Best luck getting it figured out. Take care, Dick B.

Wow! That is great insight. I may have knocked that thing into neutral! I’ll go out there and check that in the morning and let you know. Thank you!!!

Check it,my 2350 is in the same place. It should be all the way up or all the way down. In the middle would put it out of low or high gear.

In post #6 the diagram has the cover shown as item 130 (red box around the number)

I checked the high/low lever. It’s was in gear. The machine is actually stuck in gear so it won’t even try to start. When I cut the machine off (after the clutch wouldn’t work and I was still moving) it was in 1st gear. I assume it still is. I opened the inspection plate and sprayed a bit of lubricant in there. Still no dice. The clutch peddle has no resistance. I’m having a mobile mechanic come out this weekend. I’ll let you know what happens. Thank you.

From the new facts, the second sentence in the original post doesn't quite add up. It should maybe say the clutch doesn't disengage? That would line up with "stuck in gear", and with Wolfman's point that the shift fork could be broken (failing to disengage the clutch).

It might be possible now to move the high-low lever into neutral to move the machine to a better place for working on it (or winch it onto a flatbed or trailer).

With you in the seat, and with the Hi-Lo in NEUTRAL it might be possible to start the engine. You could, with the trans in 1st gear, and with the engine idling, push the Hi-Lo lever into LOW and creep the tractor along. Reverse would work this way too.

At idle it will be slow moving, and controllable by shutting it off or shifting the Hi-Lo out of gear. BE SAFE AND CAREFUL - don't allow anybody else near it when running.

It might be possible to pull the high-low lever into neutral now to roll the machine to a better place to work on it (or winch it onto flatbed or trailer).

The safety switch that allows the starter to run can be bypassed on that model by simply plugging the two wires together. That would maybe allow the machine to move a bit one way or the other on the starter. Be very careful to be in the seat with no one else near the machine.
That’s right. I used the wrong term. It won’t disengage. I agree that it seems like the fork is broke. The peddle moves up and down freely like it’s not attached (thus why I mistakenly said it won’t engage- meaning the peddle). Thanks so much for all the info. You guys are great.

I've been thinking more about your L4150 you've described above as "stuck in gear". Is this true? Is the shift lever really "stuck" ? Or can it be moved by hand to neutral ?

I edited Post #13 above to include ways to move the machine even if it's stuck in gear and can't be shifted out of gear into neutral. Please tell us clearly if that's really true.

If it can be manually shifted in and out of gear with the engine off, moving the machine under its own power is possible by using the Hi-Lo lever to go in and out of Lo gear to move it (and stop).

As stated above, its very important to only try moving the machine using the Lo lever when you are in the drivers seat - NEVER while just standing next to it - you can get run over!

And again only try to move it under its own power with everything in LOW RANGE. Dick B.
