I have noticed the last couple of times that I have used the PTO (chipper & tiller) that it grinds a little when I engage it with the clutch all the way down. I don't remember it doing that when the tractor was new. I have about 470 hours on the tractor.

Check the free play on your clutch, excessive free play on your clutch pedal may not allow enough travel to completely release the clutch, causing the PTO gears to scrap/grind.

Those gears are not synchronized so if you shift too quickly after depressing the clutch and one or both are still spinning they will clash.

And of course check your clutch adjustment.

I think I have figured out what it going on. If I don't push really hard, the floor mat is holding the clutch pedal up just enough that it is making the PTO clutch rub enough to spin the input shaft to the PTO. If I press just a little harder then I had been, it doesn't grind at all. I will have to look at where the clutch pedal is hitting the floor mat and do a little trimming.
