I bought a L3901 HST last year with a little over 500 hrs on it. I have an occasional leak on the left side of front axle. Axle has check plug on left and fill pug on right side. After operating for a while if I remove the check plug it appears to have built up pressure in the housing. I see no vent for the axle housing but is this normal? Is the fix a new seal?

I would assume there is a vent somewhere on that case and if there isn’t one then I would install one somewhere since pressure building up will cause leakage.

Look at the illustrated parts lists here or wait for a more informative answer.

There is no vent in the front axle; it does not need one. Yes, it is common to build pressure as the fluid warms and expands.

The fix is to repair the failed seal.

I had similar problem.

My dealer told me to try this fix before going the seal route. He said the UDT/S-UDT used at the factory in the axles is very light / thin. So drain and replace with 80w/90 gear oil which is thicker. My manual said both were suitable.

I did and never had the irritating small drip again. Sold the tractor 10 years later. Not sure if this still applies but sure a cheap / quick / easy test that can be made.
