L3800 hst has a loud clunking type noise when clutch is released. Just single sound but loud enough to hear over engine. Any ideas on cause? Can't tell for sure where it is coming from but sounds like it is in transmission. Worse when pto is engaged or spinning down. Started while mowing. Noise is when clutch pedal is almost all the way up.

Can you tell the exact location of the noise? Is your PTO engaged or attached to anything?

Where in the pedal movement does it occur?
and does the tractor start to move when clunks, before, during, or after?

Is it constant and slows down and speeds up with the engine?, like clunk,.. cluck,.... clunk,......clunk on a slow down?

Does it still do it with no PTO use?

It is a one time noise each time right at the top of letting the clutch out. It almost has a sheet metal sound but can't find anything external. Does not make noise if tractor is not running.

Spent some more time on finding problem after work today. PTO will not disengage. Clinking is slack in pto making noise when shaft starts to turn. Hope the whole issue is pto cable issue that can be fixed easily or at least be less costly.

I would check around where pto lever comes out of tranny case, there is a spring around shaft that pulls cable back and check for rust around shaft. Might help

Lubricating PTO spring/shaft going into transmission solved engaged problem. If PTO is engaged, how much slack should there be when you turn PTO output shaft by hand with tractor not running? The slack in my PTO shaft is where my noise is coming from when clutch is released with PTO engaged. This is a L3800HST.

About a splines worth of the rotation one way is normal, you will note the other direction it will completely spin making a clunking or clacking noise, that's normal it's the one way clutch moving, the PTO is only a semi solid set up, having play in it is normal.
